Karur Vysya Bank Launches Sponge Park in Partnership with Tambaram Corporation to Boost Water Security

Karur Vysya Bank Limited (KVB) has launched a major environmental sustainability project through its KVB Bhoomi initiative, setting up a Sponge Park in Mullai Nagar, Tambaram. The park was inaugurated in collaboration with the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation and is designed as an integrated blue-green infrastructure solution aimed at enhancing groundwater recharge, mitigating urban flooding, and creating sustainable community spaces.

The Sponge Park project addresses the increasing challenges of rapid urbanization, limited green public space, declining groundwater levels, and seasonal waterlogging in the region. The area was selected due to its recurring issues with urban flooding and groundwater stress. As a nature-based solution, the park is intended to simultaneously improve water management, enhance climate resilience, boost biodiversity, and promote community well-being, establishing a model for sustainable urban development.

The inauguration ceremony featured Shri D. Sarathkumar, Minister for Human Resource Management of the Government of Tamil Nadu, alongside Shri S. Balachander, IAS, Commissioner of the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation, and Shri B. Sankar, Executive Director of Karur Vysya Bank, among other senior officials from both institutions.

Commenting on the project, MD & CEO Mr. Ramesh Babu stated that sustainability is a core part of Karur Vysya Bank’s commitment to responsible growth and community development. He highlighted that the Sponge Park at Mullai Nagar, under KVB Bhoomi, represents a pioneering example of how nature-based infrastructure can enhance water security and mitigate urban flooding.

The project aims to benefit residents across all age groups by providing an accessible, safe, and eco-friendly recreational area. Additionally, the park will serve as a living demonstration of environmental management and sustainable urban planning, increasing awareness among students and visitors regarding ecological conservation and water sensitive design.

The initiative is aligned with KVB's corporate social responsibility goals concerning environmental sustainability. It contributes toward several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), and Life on Land (SDG 15).
