JD Vance Says Trump Will Not Rest Until Iran Abandons Nuclear Weapons Ambitions
US Vice President Outlines Clear Objective After Strikes on Iran
Days after the United States and Israel launched a unilateral military offensive against Iran, US Vice President JD Vance underscored President Donald Trump primary objective: preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said the administration’s goal remains firm and unambiguous. He stressed that the president has consistently made clear that Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear arms under any circumstances.
Vance also highlighted the significant military capacity of the United States to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and missile capabilities, which he described as posing a threat to American troops.
Operation Epic Fury Launched After Talks Collapsed
According to Vance, negotiations between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program collapsed after US authorities concluded that Iranian assurances “did not pass the smell test.” The breakdown in diplomacy ultimately led President Trump to authorize Operation Epic Fury.He revealed that senior US envoys, including Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff, held intensive talks with Iranian officials in Geneva. The discussions focused on exchanging sanctions relief for a halt to Iran’s nuclear activities.
Despite efforts to avoid a broader regional conflict, Vance said Iranian negotiators maintained that uranium enrichment for civilian energy purposes was a matter of national pride. He questioned those claims, pointing to the construction of enrichment facilities 70 to 80 feet underground and enrichment levels beyond what is required for civilian use.
Concerns Over Enrichment Facilities and Long Term Commitment
Vance clarified that the United States does not object to Iran producing medical isotopes. However, he argued that deeply buried enrichment facilities and high levels of uranium enrichment were inconsistent with purely civilian objectives. He reiterated that the president seeks a durable and long term solution. According to Vance, the administration is not focused only on temporary setbacks such as destroying facilities like Fordow or other enrichment sites. Instead, it wants a binding commitment from Iran that it will permanently abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons capability.
Vance added that while Iran’s nuclear program had previously been set back during President Trump’s earlier term, the current objective is to ensure that Tehran does not remain on the brink of nuclear capability in the future.
Strikes in Tehran and Casualties Reported
On February 28, 2026, US and Israeli forces carried out strikes in Tehran and assassinated Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.According to Al Jazeera, at least 555 Iranians have been killed in US Israel strikes over the past three days, marking a sharp escalation in the conflict.
The developments signal a dramatic intensification of hostilities in the region as Washington reiterates its resolve to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
