Prime Minister Stresses Navigating Global Rivalry: India Navy 'Guarantees' Peace and Security in the Indian Ocean Region

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh reaffirmed today that India stands as the primary guarantor of peace and stability throughout the increasingly complex Indian Ocean Region. Speaking to naval personnel in Visakhapatnam, Mr. Singh commended the Indian Navy for safeguarding maritime interests while upholding the Tricolour amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The address, given on July 10, 2026, coincided with the commissioning of Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate into the Indian Navy. The event underscored India's growing commitment to both defense readiness and maritime supremacy in critical global waterways.

Strategic Importance of Maritime Security in the IOR

Mr. Singh emphasized that maritime security is central to India's economic growth and national interests. He stated that over 90 per cent of India's trade by volume passes through maritime routes.

The nation’s energy security, coupled with its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and island territories, makes the continuous protection of these sea lanes vital. The Raksha Mantri stressed that increasing geopolitical competition and the growing presence of extra-regional powers necessitate heightened vigilance from naval forces.

Affirming India's Role as Regional Stakeholder

Describing India as the largest and most responsible stakeholder in the Indian Ocean Region, Shri Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining a stable maritime environment. He powerfully asserted that securing the region is fundamentally "our responsibility."

The commissioning of Mahendragiri was highlighted as a shining example of India’s progress toward self-reliance. The Raksha Mantri credited the valour and dedication of the defence forces for protecting the nation from various threats and challenges.

Modern Warfare Readiness and Indigenous Capability

Addressing naval officers, Mr. Singh urged soldiers to continuously upgrade their skills and master cutting-edge technologies. He stressed that the nature of warfare is rapidly evolving and future conflicts could emerge in new or unforeseen forms.

He assured the personnel that the Government will do no less than leave a stone unturned to equip them with world-class weaponry, technology, and resources. However, he added that weapons alone cannot win wars; it is the people wielding them who ultimately prevail.

Naval Leadership Commits to Maritime Vigilance

The naval event featured Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, along with Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla and other senior officers of the Indian Navy.

Shri Singh’s address served as a strong mandate for the Navy, solidifying its role in defending national interests across the vast and strategically vital Indian Ocean Region.
