Domestic Production Skyrockets as Electronics Sector Achieves 7X Growth in 12 Years​

The Government of India's vision for 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' has significantly transformed the domestic electronics manufacturing landscape. Through a multi-pronged strategy, the government developed not just finished products, but also the entire ecosystem, progressing from assembly to components and advanced machinery. This concerted effort has positioned India as a critical global hub for electronic manufacturing.

Exponential Growth in Electronics Manufacturing Defined by Key Metrics​

The growth trajectory of electronics in India over the last 12 years is staggering. Production of electronics goods increased sevenfold, growing from approximately ₹1.9 Lakh Crore in 2014-15 to about ₹13.11 Lakh Crore in the current fiscal year (FY 2025-26). Exports have seen an even more impressive increase, multiplying by eleven from around ₹38 thousand Crore to over ₹4.24 Lakh Crore.

The mobility sector has been a standout success story within this expansion. Production of mobile phones has grown thirty-threefold, rising from approximately ₹18 thousand Crore in 2014-15 to ₹6.27 Lakh Crore. Furthermore, the export value of mobile phones witnessed a massive growth, increasing one hundred and sixty-five times over the period.

PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing Drives Mobile Revolution​

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM), introduced in 2020, catalyzed substantial changes in the country's mobile industry. This initiative has successfully transformed India from a net importer to a net exporter of smartphones. As of March 2026, the scheme reports remarkable performance metrics across investment, production, and exports.

Investment into the ecosystem under PLI-LSEM has reached ₹20,587 Crore, significantly surpassing the target of ₹7,000 Crore. Production figures stand at ₹11,61,581 Crore, achieving 142% of the set target. Exports have also performed strongly, reaching ₹6,43,323 Crore, which is 132% against the targeted ₹4,87,530 Crore.

The success is profound: smartphones, which were not a top 100 exported commodity in 2014, now stand as India's leading exported individual commodity in FY 2025-26, surpassing petroleum and gems and jewellery. Importantly, the country has achieved a milestone where 99.2% of mobile phones used domestically are manufactured within India.

PLI for IT Hardware and Component Schemes Strengthen Supply Chain Integrity​

To ensure deep domestic resilience, the government introduced several robust support mechanisms extending beyond handset manufacturing. The PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware, launched in 2023, aims to make India a trusted global supply chain hub for items like laptops and servers. Cumulative production under this scheme now stands at ₹24,385.89 Crore, with total cumulative investment recorded at ₹1056.36 Crore.

The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) was launched to bolster the underlying supply chain. This scheme aims to attract investments across critical areas such as Printed Circuit Boards and passive components. Currently, 75 applications for 23 products have been approved under ECMS, promising an eventual investment of ₹61,671 Crore and creating a projected production value of ₹4.51 lakh crore.

Semicon 2.0 Accelerates Semiconductor Ecosystem Development​

Further strengthening the domestic ecosystem is the Semicon India Programme, which addresses the critical need for semiconductor technology in electronic products. The initial programme saw 12 projects approved with committed investment totaling ₹1.64 lakh Crore. Following its success, Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on July 15, 2026, with a significant outlay of ₹1,27,500 Cr.

Semicon 2.0 is designed to fast-track the design and development of indigenous chips. It aims to expand semiconductor fabrication units (fabs) and advanced packaging capabilities, while supporting materials and gases essential for manufacturing. This dedication ensures that India’s ambition extends from assembly to core technological creation.

Employment Generation and MSME Integration across Electronics Sector​

The electronics sector has emerged as a powerful engine for industrial employment in India, currently supporting approximately 25 lakh jobs, both direct and indirect. The mobile manufacturing ecosystem alone provides crucial employment for about 12 lakh individuals across the value chain.

Gender inclusivity is a key success metric, with high-precision mobile phone manufacturing segments reporting that almost 70% of the workforce are women. Moreover, government schemes have played a vital role in integrating Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) into global supply chains. More than 85 MSMEs have been successfully supported under various initiatives by MeitY, playing a critical ancillary support role for major electronic manufacturers.
