India Emerges as Global Leader in Renewable Energy Expansion, UN Hosts High-Level Roundtable During Guterres Visit

UN Roundtable to Spotlight India’s Renewable Energy Leadership

United Nations, February 17: With India emerging as a global leader in renewable energy expansion, the United Nations is convening a high-level roundtable in New Delhi during the visit of Antonio Guterres, underscoring clean energy transition as a top global priority.

According to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the meeting will bring together senior leaders from industry, finance, policymaking, and civil society to deliberate on renewable energy and the broader energy transition agenda.

The roundtable forms part of the Secretary-General’s continued efforts to accelerate a faster, fairer, and more inclusive global energy transition in alignment with the Paris Agreement.

Focus Areas: Renewable Development, Grid Strengthening and Investment Mobilization

The agenda is designed to move beyond discussion and identify concrete steps across key pillars of the clean energy shift. These include:
  • Accelerating renewable energy deployment
  • Strengthening grid infrastructure and energy storage systems
  • Mobilizing large-scale investment to support transition goals
The UN’s emphasis on India reflects the country’s expanding renewable capacity and its growing role in shaping global climate action discourse.

India’s Climate Commitments and Emissions Targets

India has committed to reducing the GDP emissions intensity of greenhouse gases by 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030. The country also aims to:
  • Raise the share of non-fossil fuel electric power capacity to 50 per cent
  • Create a carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes
Last week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that India has already achieved nearly two-thirds of its nationally determined contributions in combating climate change, four years ahead of schedule.

She noted that the progress has been driven through domestic funding and technology deployment.

“Six years ago, we were spending approximately 3.7 per cent of our GDP on climate action. Today, that figure is close to 5.6 per cent,” she said.

She also stressed that while India is advancing independently, global financing and technology flows remain essential.

AI Impact Summit 2026 Provides Broader Context

Antonio Guterres is visiting India to participate in the AI Impact Summit 2026, a major global gathering on artificial intelligence being held in the Global South at this scale for the first time.

Organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the summit is taking place in New Delhi from February 16 to 20. It brings together governments, international organizations, industry leaders, academics, and civil society to explore how artificial intelligence can be harnessed responsibly to advance sustainable development.

The renewable energy roundtable, held alongside the summit, positions India at the center of two defining global transitions: clean energy and responsible AI deployment.
