India Corporate Revenues Surge by 19.4% Fueling Record Q1 Rally, Driven by Banks and Manufacturing
India Inc has reported a robust 19.4% year-on-year revenue growth in the June quarter, marking its strongest performance in at least nine quarters. This surge was primarily propelled by exceptional results from key sectors including auto, banking, metals, and pharmaceuticals. While revenues exhibited strong momentum across major corporate segments, net profit grew slower at 11%, recording the slowest growth rate seen in a year due to rising input costs for many companies.Sectoral Powerhouses Drive Corporate Growth
The breadth of this corporate strength was reflected across different market capitalizations. For common sample size of 3,589 companies, net profit grew in double digits for both the third and fourth consecutive quarters. Notably, smallcap and midcap segments showed significantly stronger growth trends compared to large caps. Midcap 150 reported an impressive 34.0% rise, while Smallcap 250 registered a substantial 36.4% increase. The financial sector continued to provide strong support to the overall bottom line of the sampled companies. Strong performance was also observed across banking and finance, capital goods, healthcare, retail, and jewellery sectors. These trends suggest continued strength in credit growth, market activity, and asset quality within the corporate landscape.
Margin Pressure and Rising Input Costs Challenge Profitability
Despite the impressive top-line revenue surge, operating margins faced contraction due to increased operational costs. The total sample’s operating margin stood at 16.6% in June, down from 19.6% in the previous year. This decline reflects the pronounced impact of higher input cost inflation across various industries.Excluding lending companies, the average raw material costs relative to revenue rose sharply to 38%. This level is noted as the highest in at least 13 quarters, substantially up from 33.6% a year ago. While some benefit was cushioning by utilizing lower-cost inventory, experts warn that this pressure point remains critical for future profitability.
Outlook: Premiumisation and Seasonal Demand Set Market Tone
While input costs have posed significant short-term challenges, the near-term outlook retains constructive elements. Analysts anticipate revenue momentum will be sustained in coming quarters through premiumisation trends and seasonal demand from wedding and festive periods. These factors are expected to provide crucial support to future company profitability. The oil and gas sector experienced notable pressure due to higher fuel marketing losses and rising LPG under-recoveries amidst volatile international energy prices. Excluding the performance of this challenging sector, the sample’s net profit growth stood at 20.9%, highlighting the resilience in other areas.
Future Growth Drivers and Risks
For the remainder of the fiscal year, analysts project a broad improvement across financial sectors, contingent on trends in commodity prices. Experts expect large caps to see around 13% EPS growth, while midcap and smallcaps are forecasted for stronger 18-20% growth. However, both analysts caution that several factors must be closely monitored moving forward. Commodity price volatility, broader inflation trends, and geopolitical developments remain key risk elements. Sustained strength in credit growth, infrastructure spending, and capex activity is still viewed as critical support for earnings momentum.
