GMR Airports Plans Massive Rs 19,400 Crore Expansion as India Aviation Market Set for Hypergrowth

GMR Airports Ltd., a major competitor to the Adani Group's airport operator, has unveiled ambitious expansion plans for its New Delhi and Hyderabad facilities. The company intends to invest up to Rs 19,400 crore ($2 billion) over the next five to seven years, signaling strong confidence in India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.

The investments are crucial for boosting capacity and modernizing infrastructure at key hubs. Saurabh Chawla, executive director for finance and strategy at GMR Airports, confirmed these plans, noting that they aim to keep pace with surging passenger volumes across the nation.

Focus on Key Indian Aviation Hubs

GMR is earmarking substantial capital towards its two major projects. Approximately Rs 13,800 crore is allocated for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad's southern industrial hub. Furthermore, up to Rs 5,600 crore has been set aside for the New Delhi airport upgrade.

These investments will be carried out by the respective airport ventures and are not directly tied to GMR Airports, which serves as the holding company. Upon completion, the modernized Hyderabad airport is projected to accommodate about 80 million passengers annually. This represents more than double its current annual volume of 34 million fliers.

India’s Booming Aviation Landscape

The move comes amidst accelerating demand in the world's third-largest domestic aviation market. India's flight traffic is forecast to grow sixfold, reaching approximately 1.1 billion passengers within 14 years.

Government estimates also project significant fleet expansion in the country. The commercial airline fleet is expected to grow from around 400 planes (as of 2014) to over 2,350 aircraft by 2040. This indicates a massive scale-up for Indian air travel operations.

Strategic Vision and Future Growth Areas

The build-outs in Delhi and Hyderabad are viewed by GMR Airports as merely the start of a broader modernization drive. The company currently manages six airports across India, along with facilities in the Philippines and another project under construction in Greece.

Chawla added that investment plans for the Nagpur airport, which was taken over in June 2026, are presently under discussion. GMR Airports is also focused on securing opportunities from local projects that the Indian government intends to sell.

Maintaining Focus on Core Operations

GMR Airports maintains a distinct strategic focus regarding airline involvement despite policy changes being discussed by the government. The company has no plans to engage in the airline business, even if such rules are adjusted.

This stance is driven by the group's desire to remain concentrated on its core airport operations. These include essential services like aircraft maintenance and real estate development surrounding their aviation facilities.

Rival Adani Airport Holdings Ltd., meanwhile, is noted as the largest operator in terms of number of airports. They plan to invest $15 billion over five years to boost passenger capacity at their own facilities, according to reports from Bloomberg News.
