Global Chaos Drives Market Plunge: Sensex Drops Over 350 Points as Middle East Conflict Elevates Crude Oil Above $92 Per Barrel

The Indian stock market experienced a sharp decline on Wednesday, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The widening conflict has significantly impacted global energy prices, pushing crude oil above $92 per barrel and triggering investor uncertainty across major indices.

Sensex fell over 350 points, settling at 77,118, while Nifty 50 slipped to 24,091 after trading lower by 96 points. Broader markets also saw a downturn, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices marking declines of up to 0.5%.

Geopolitical Fallout and Market Volatility

The market reacted negatively following reports that middle eastern tensions had intensified, disrupting critical international shipping routes. Two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude destined for Asia reportedly reversed course in the Red Sea after threats originating from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis.

This escalation adds immense pressure to energy markets. With Iran already threatening shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea route serves as a vital alternate path for millions of barrels of Saudi oil daily. Consequently, crude oil prices jumped significantly, crossing the $92 per barrel mark, fueling investor apprehension.

Sectoral Performance and Stock Movement

While major indices fell, individual stock movements showed significant divergence. IndiGo and Sun Pharma led losses on the Sensex, dropping by 2-3%. Tech Mahindra and Infosys also saw declines exceeding 1% each. Banking stocks like SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, TCS, HCL Tech, and Kotak Mahindra Bank all fell by nearly 1%.

Conversely, some consumer and financial stocks demonstrated resilience, trading in the green with marginal gains. Maruti Suzuki, Titan, Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, Eternal, M&M, and Bajaj Finance were among those performing strongly amidst the market downturn.

Analyst View: Road Ahead for Indian Markets

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, stated that the US-Iran conflict and rising Brent crude prices will continue to exert downward pressure on markets. However, he pointed out positive domestic indicators.

Vijayakumar noted that early automobile Q1 numbers were impressive, with management commentary reflecting optimism regarding exports. He suggested that the price correction observed in some leading banking stocks may be concluding, indicating value opportunities in this segment.

The analyst further added that the rupee is likely to remain stable. This stability is supported by positive developments concerning dollar flows from FCNR deposits, which have now surpassed $20 billion and are expected to gather momentum going forward.

Technical Outlook on Nifty 50

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, maintained a technical view focused on disciplined investing. While yesterday's dips were contained, the effort by Nifty to breach the 24,220 level remained lukewarm. This constrained him from expressing outright upside views currently.

James still favors a 'buy on dips' approach for investors. However, he specified that this strategy holds provided the downside does not extend significantly beyond the 24,099 level. While momentum indicators are weak, James assured that Nifty's inability to surge does not necessarily mean an impending market collapse.
