GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchi Shatters Records as First Export Consignment Reaches Dubai Market

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated a monumental milestone for Assam’s agricultural sector. The agency facilitated the first export consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai on June 7, 2026. This event significantly expanded international market access for products originating from the North Eastern Region.

Marking Global Recognition for Horticultural Excellence

The one metric tonne shipment is comprised entirely of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi, a product celebrated throughout India. It is highly renowned for its superior eating quality, distinctive aroma, bright-red appearance, and exceptional sweetness. The region boasts several noteworthy litchi varieties cultivated there, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji, and Sahi.

The Geographical Indication (GI) status is crucial in this venture. It has successfully strengthened the identity and market recognition of Tezpur Litchi internationally. This export underlines the growing acceptance of India's GI-tagged agricultural products within global markets.

Economic Uplift: Farmers Secure Premium Pricing

A direct positive outcome of this successful initiative involves substantially improved returns for local growers. Farmers linked to the export supply chain received nearly 10 per cent higher prices compared to prevailing domestic market rates, despite strong local demand for the fruit.

The shipment has immediately generated new marketing opportunities specifically for litchi growers. This achievement is expected to encourage greater participation from farmers in value chains that are oriented towards export markets, thereby supporting sustainable livelihood development.

APEDA’s Strategic Push for North Eastern Exports

APEDA plays a vital role in integrating Indian farmers into global economic cycles. The Authority actively promotes agricultural exports through a multifaceted approach. This includes dedicated infrastructure development and capacity-building programs aimed at the sector.

Through sustained engagement with State Governments, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters, and other stakeholders, APEDA is fostering new export opportunities. Its mandate under the APEDA Act, 1985, involves promoting scheduled agricultural products and ensuring quality assurance for them.

The Road Ahead: Paving Way for Larger Volume Exports

The successful movement of Tezpur Litchi to Dubai serves as a powerful indicator for future growth. This milestone is anticipated to pave the way for significantly larger export volumes in the coming period. It further strengthens the global presence and market appeal of Assam’s GI-tagged products.

The event, which was ceremonially flagged off, saw the presence of several key stakeholders. Attendees included Member of Legislative Assembly, Tezpur Shri Prithiraj Rava and other government officials from the Agriculture Department, alongside representatives from M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd.
