New Delhi has reaffirmed its growing role on the global stage. India is emerging as a pivotal strategic supplier of essential food and agricultural commodities. This confidence was highlighted by the High Commissioner of India to Singapore, Shilpak Ambule.

Speaking at the Food & Hospitality Asia (FHA) show, Ambule stated that India is exceptionally well-positioned to meet the evolving and premium demands of markets like Singapore. This focus addresses broader concerns around global food security.

The high-level comments were made during the inaugural edition of Indusfood Asia 2026. The event is hosted by the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) and the Department of Commerce.

Tapping the Gateway: Singapore's Role in Global Food Sourcing​

The launch of Indusfood Asia 2026 marks a major milestone in India's effort to penetrate international markets. The forum aims to contribute significantly to global food security through innovative and sustainable solutions.

According to TPCI, hosting the event in Singapore is highly strategic. It serves as a vital gateway not only into the wider ASEAN region but also the Asia-Pacific market.

Despite having a small population of around 6 million, Singapore has a massive import requirement. The nation imports $16.2 billion worth of food and beverages, making up nearly 90 per cent of its total needs.

ASEAN Market Access and Trade Potential​

Mohit Singla, Chairman of TPCI, noted that global food distributors, retail procurement teams, and HoReCa buyers frequently establish regional headquarters in Singapore. This makes success in Singapore directly open pathways into neighboring ASEAN markets.

The sheer scale of the opportunity is evident in the regional sourcing structure. Businesses rely on Singapore as both a distribution and decision-making hub for Southeast Asia.

Showcasing Diversity: India's Agri-Commodity Strength​

The event witnessed the participation of over 100 Indian companies. These exhibitors showcased an exceptionally diverse product portfolio to international buyers.

The range of goods featured included processed foods, rice, tea, coffee, and spices. Significant focus was placed on value-added products and GI-tagged items, such as makhana and Kala Namak rice.

Major commodity boards and export promotion bodies participated, underscoring the sector's depth. Attendees included APEDA, MPEDA, Spices Board, Coffee Board, and the Tea Board, along with member companies and officials.

Massive Growth Forecast Signals Market Opportunity​

The Asia food and beverages (F&B) market is projected to reach a substantial figure, surpassing $3.3 trillion by 2034. Furthermore, the hospitality sector is anticipated to climb to $181.2 billion by 2029.

The Food & Hospitality Asia (FHA) show itself is a massive international platform. It runs from April 21, 2026, to April 24, and hosts 2,750 exhibitors from over 60 countries.

The event is set to attract over 80,000 trade visitors and buyers globally, underlining the immense commercial interest in the Asia region's food trade.
