Current Account Slumps Sharply: India’s BoP Shows Major Deficit Surge as Trade Imbalance Widens

Preliminary data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for June 2026 reveals a significant shift in India's Balance of Payments (BoP). The preliminary figures indicate a sharp deterioration in the Current Account balance, driven primarily by widening merchandise deficits. These developments paint a challenging picture regarding external balances as the economy navigates global trade currents.

Deterioration in Merchandise and Services Trade

The most striking development is the decline in the Current Account (Net), which registered at $-6.2$ billion for June 2026, a dramatic contrast to the $1.2$ billion reported in June 2025 (PR). This negative trend reflects growing pressures in the trade and service sectors.

Merchandise (Net) accounts worsened significantly, recording a deficit of $-30.2$ billion in June 2026 compared to the $-19.2$ billion seen previously. Exports reached $41.2$ billion, but imports climbed substantially to $71.4$ billion for the month.

Services (Net) saw modest improvement, yet this was insufficient to offset trade deficits. Services exports stood at $36.4$ billion, while services imports registered $18.5$ billion in June 2026. Transfers (Net) remained robustly positive at $11.9$ billion for the month.

Capital Flows and Investment Trends

The Balance of Payments analysis shows mixed results when examining capital account components. While the Overall Balance (A+B) registered $2.9$ billion in June 2026, this figure stands against a challenging backdrop.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) remains strong, with net FDI at $1.3$ billion for the month. This was supported by domestic inflows of $3.5$ billion, despite some outflows to foreign entities totaling $2.1$ billion.

However, Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) showed a substantial negative swing, recording $-9.6$ billion for June 2026. This indicated that portfolio investment flows were heavily negative during the period analyzed. External Commercial Borrowings (Net) registered a deficit of $-0.5$ billion in June 2026.

Broader BoP Dynamics and Monetary Movements

Reviewing the aggregate data, the overall balance stood at $2.9$ billion for the month of June 2026. This contrasts with the broader quarterly period (April-June 2026), where the Overall Balance was recorded at $-8.1$ billion.

Monetary Movements, defined as the movement required to adjust the overall balance, registered a deficit of $-2.9$ billion for June 2026. This figure is linked to the significant trade imbalances highlighted in the preliminary data.

The RBI's release provides these developments on an initial basis, underscoring the ongoing scrutiny into India’s external financial stability amid global economic fluctuations.
