Balrampur Chini Mills Hosts 'Bioyug On Wheels' in Rajkot, Showcasing Sustainable PLA Alternatives

Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd (BCML) successfully conducted its 'Bioyug on Wheels' campaign in Rajkot, Gujarat, promoting the use of bio-based materials and encouraging conversations around sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. The interactive awareness initiative was held at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Art Gallery grounds near Racecourse in Rajkot on July 9, 2026.

The mobile campaign focused on demonstrating how compostable bioplastics, made from sugarcane, can serve as a practical alternative for daily life. Visitors participated in live demonstrations and explored products manufactured using PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastics. The event gathered more than 500 visitors, including students, educators, and sustainability enthusiasts, who gained insights into the environmental benefits of these bio-based materials.

A key scientific aspect highlighted during the exhibition was a study conducted by a premier government institution confirming that PLA microplastics break down safely in Indian soil when compared to conventional plastics. The research noted a significant decline in PLA microplastics within 180 days, reducing from 287 to just 18 particles per kilogram under Indian soil conditions.

The campaign received support and attention from local governance officials. Among the attendees were Mr. Pragnesh Solanki, Management & Environment Engineer of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (West Zone), Mr. Dipal Kathad, Management Manager at the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (West Zone), and Mr. Dipak Pandit, Retd. Water Disaster Officer.

Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director of Balrampur Chini Mills Limited, commented on the positive response from Rajkot. She stated that the enthusiasm shown by compounders, converters, bottle manufacturers, the local municipality, and the wider community indicates a growing awareness regarding the need for sustainable choices. SR said PLA bioplastics offer one of the most effective eco-friendly alternatives to banned single-use plastic items such as cutlery, garbage bags, bottles, cold cups, and other everyday products. Through this endeavor, BCML aims to make conversations around bio-based innovation accessible and inspire collective action toward a cleaner and more circular future.

Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd is working towards sustainable manufacturing within the sector, having set up India's first Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) plant with a capacity of 80,000 TPA. The company maintains operations across ten sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh, boasting an aggregate crushing capacity of 80,000 TCD, distillery operations of 1050 KLPD, and power cogeneration capacity of 175.7 MW (saleable).
