BCML and Lucknow Cantonment Board Launch Landmark Bioplastics Adoption Initiative in India

Lucknow, June 5, 2026 — Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) and the Lucknow Cantonment Board jointly launched Bioyug Green Command 2026 on World Environment Day, dedicating a significant commitment to advancing India's bioplastics ecosystem. The initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and reducing plastic waste, was formally introduced in the presence of Shri Rajnath Singh Ji, Hon'ble Defence Minister of India, who attended as the Chief Guest.

The event marked the rollout of a pioneering collaboration between Balrampur Bioyug and the Lucknow Cantonment Board, following the signing of a landmark MoU and BCML securing its first institutional order for compostable PLA-based products earlier this year. The program provided a platform to demonstrate how sustainable materials can contribute to India's broader environmental goals.

The ceremony included a guided exhibition showcasing India’s emerging bioplastics value chain. A key component of the event was the recognition of meritorious ITI girl students, supporting the "Building Skills. Transforming Futures - Balrampur Bioyug Bioplastic 3D Printing Project," an initiative designed to equip young women with advanced manufacturing skills in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vivek Saraogi, Chairman & Managing Director of BCML, emphasized that India is at a defining moment where economic growth and environmental responsibility must advance together. He stated that transitioning from conventional materials to sustainable alternatives offers an opportunity to build new industries and strengthen domestic manufacturing, underscoring the role of Bioyug Green Command 2026 in accelerating this transition.

Ms. Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director at BCML, noted that the shift toward biomaterials is an economic opportunity for empowering farmers and strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). She argued that while the last century belonged to oil and petrochemicals, the next could belong to farmers and fields, stressing that future materials should be cultivated rather than mined.

Focus on Policy and Defense

The Bioyug Green Command 2026 featured two high-level panel discussions designed to foster dialogue toward a sustainable future. The first session, "Mandate to Market: Unlocking the Bioplastics Value Chain in Uttar Pradesh," examined market opportunities, policy support, manufacturing capabilities, and industry collaboration needed for scaling bioplastics adoption.

The second session, "From Mess to Mission: Bioplastics for Defence," assessed the potential of sustainable materials within defence establishments to contribute to operational efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental stewardship. Over 2,000 stakeholders, including representatives from government, academia, defense, industry, and civil society, participated in these discussions.

Minister Highlights Microplastics Threat

Addressing the gathering, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh Ji spoke on the necessity of sustainable materials for both India's green growth and national security. He highlighted that while environmental conservation is vital, many people fail to consider the origins of the products they use.

The Minister addressed the global threat posed by microplastics, noting that scientific research shows these tiny plastic particles are pervasive and have been found in the blood of infants. He cited a report stating approximately 350,000 people worldwide die annually due to microplastics, and about one million marine mammals perish each year from plastic ingestion.

Shri Singh emphasized the benefits of PLA (Polylactic Acid), describing it as an entirely organic bioplastic that nature digests. "Crucially, it is produced from sugarcane grown in our own fields," he stated, noting that this move towards domestic bioplastics reduces reliance on foreign nations and helps build self-reliance against supply chain disruptions.
