ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India to Launch ₹70,000 Crore Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh

Work to Begin on India’s Largest Greenfield Steel Project

Amaravathi, March 19 – ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is set to begin work next week on its proposed integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh, marking the launch of the country’s largest greenfield steel project.

The joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel will invest approximately ₹70,000 crore in the first phase to develop an 8.2 million tonnes per annum capacity plant near Visakhapatnam.

Land Allocation and Government Support Accelerate Project Timeline

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated around 2,200 acres for the project and provided support in securing faster approvals and infrastructure development.

The company had applied for land in August 2024 and secured the allocation within about two and a half months, indicating expedited coordination between the state and industry.

Strategic Expansion Beyond Western India

AM/NS India CEO Dilip Oommen said the project highlights strong collaboration between the government and industry and will help the company expand beyond its western India base.

He noted that the new facility will strengthen the company’s ability to serve eastern and southern markets more efficiently.

Integrated Facilities to Strengthen Manufacturing Ecosystem

The plant will include both upstream and downstream facilities, aimed at supporting ancillary industries and reinforcing the overall manufacturing value chain.

Phase I will focus on producing flat steel and downstream products, with a focus on import substitution.

Commissioning Timeline and Infrastructure Development

Initial units of the plant are expected to become operational by the end of 2028 or early 2029, with near-full commissioning targeted by 2030.

As part of the project infrastructure, the company will lay around 267 km of slurry pipelines under an agreement with NMDC Ltd to transport iron ore.

Employment Generation and Broader Expansion Plans

The project is expected to generate employment opportunities and support the rehabilitation of affected families.

The Andhra Pradesh plant forms part of AM/NS India’s broader expansion strategy, which also includes capacity addition at its Hazira facility in Gujarat and a proposed integrated steel plant in Odisha.
