PROI Investment Limits Proposed to Be Raised

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday announced that individual persons residing outside India, referred to as PROIs, will be permitted to invest in equity shares of listed Indian companies through a portfolio investment scheme.

As part of the proposal, the government also plans to raise the investment limit for PROIs to 10 percent from the existing 5 percent, widening participation by overseas individual investors in India’s equity markets.

Corporate Bond Market and Derivatives Framework

While presenting the Union Budget 2026-27, the Finance Minister proposed the development of a framework that provides suitable access to funds and derivatives linked to corporate bond indices. The move is aimed at strengthening the depth and participation in the corporate debt market.

Focus on Urban Infrastructure Development

The government reiterated its commitment to infrastructure development in cities with populations exceeding five lakh. This continued focus is intended to support urban growth and improve civic infrastructure in large and expanding urban centres across the country.

Upgrades in Traditional Medicine and Astronomy Infrastructure

The Budget proposals also include upgrading the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre located in Jamnagar. In addition, the country’s telescope infrastructure will be enhanced to promote research and development in astrophysics and astronomy.

Tourism, Mountaineering, and Sustainable Trails

The Centre announced a pilot scheme to upgrade the skills of 10,000 tourist guides across 20 iconic tourist destinations. The government also highlighted India’s potential to offer world-class mountaineering experiences.

Further, ecologically sustainable trails will be developed in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, reinforcing the focus on sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.
