Travel Trends Shift: Asian Destinations and Domestic Getaways Gain Momentum Amid Middle East Disruptions

Mumbai, March 23: Travel preferences among Indian tourists are undergoing a noticeable shift as disruptions in the Middle East reshape global travel patterns. A report released on Monday highlights a growing inclination toward alternative international destinations and domestic leisure travel, driven by flight disruptions and airspace constraints in the affected region.

Shift Away from Middle East Routes

According to travel platform ixigo, recent geopolitical developments have led to operational challenges in Middle East airspace, prompting travelers to reconsider their plans. Traditionally a popular choice during this time of the year, the region is now witnessing a decline in preference as holidaymakers opt for more accessible and familiar destinations.

The report indicates that evolving global dynamics have influenced travelers to explore safer and more convenient routes, contributing to a broader diversification in destination choices.

Asian Destinations See Strong Booking Growth

Asian markets have emerged as key beneficiaries of this shift, recording a sharp rise in flight bookings in March. Vietnam leads the surge with a 130 percent year-on-year increase, making it the top international destination among Indian travelers.

Other countries also reported significant growth in bookings:

  • Nepal: up 88 percent
  • Sri Lanka: up 68 percent
  • Indonesia: up 33 percent
  • Singapore: up 32 percent
  • Thailand: up 22 percent
The data is based on flight bookings made on ixigo’s platform from the start of March, compared with the same period last year.

Domestic Travel Gains Strong Traction

Alongside international travel changes, domestic tourism is witnessing robust growth. Popular leisure destinations across India have recorded strong year-on-year increases in flight bookings.

Udaipur tops the list with a 69 percent rise, followed by:

  • Jodhpur: 47 percent
  • Bagdogra: 44 percent
  • Srinagar: 41 percent
  • Agartala: 38 percent
This trend reflects a growing preference for short-haul and easily accessible travel options.

Industry Perspective

ixigo Co-Founder and Group CEO Aloke Bajpai noted that while the Middle East has historically been a preferred destination for Indian travelers during this period, recent developments have shifted demand toward Southeast Asia and domestic markets.

He added that there is a clear tilt toward closer international destinations, with a significant rise in flight bookings across these regions.

Outlook

The report underscores a broader transformation in travel behavior, as travelers adapt quickly to changing global conditions. With convenience, accessibility, and stability becoming key decision factors, both Asian destinations and domestic tourism are expected to remain in focus in the near term.
