Thermal Power Stability: India Ensures Coal Supply as Grid Integration and Capacity Expansion Ramp Up
As power generation remains critical to the nation's economic stability, the supply chain for thermal plants has received comprehensive governmental assurance. According to recent ministry statements, robust measures are being implemented to ensure uninterrupted coal availability during peak demand periods. This detailed oversight includes continuous stock monitoring, capacity additions, and advanced grid support systems focused on integrating renewable energy sources effectively.Status of Coal-Based Generation Capacity
Coal plays a vital foundational role in the country's power mix. The existing coal (including Lignite) based generation capacity stands at 230.8 GW. This segment supplies 69.54% of the total electricity generated between April and June 2026.The maximum generation achieved from these thermal plants during non-solar peak demand hours is approximately 188.8 GW. This output represents roughly 75% of the overall power generation (which totals 251.4 GW) at that time.
Coal Stock and Operational Planning for Thermal Plants
Current stock levels provide a sufficient buffer against daily requirements. As on July 12, 2026, a coal stock of 42.8 Million Tonnes (MT) is available at the Thermal Power Plants. This inventory is calculated to be enough for 14 days when operating at an 85% Plant Load Factor (PLF).The operational commitment to uninterrupted supply remains high, as sufficient coal is currently being received by all thermal power plants to meet their daily demands. Scheduled maintenance of these crucial units is meticulously planned in advance. This planning is done with a clear understanding of the demand scenarios specific to each month.
Government Initiatives Bolstering Coal Supply Chains
The Government of India has launched several focused initiatives to stabilize and strengthen the thermal power sector. During Financial Year (FY) 2025-26, a significant addition of 9,470 MW Thermal capacity was recorded. Furthermore, an additional 2,260 MW has been successfully commissioned during the current financial year.Supply chain oversight involves stringent coordination between key ministries. A joint committee consisting of the Ministry of Power, Railways, and the Ministry of Coal monitors coal supply on a daily basis. The Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC), which includes senior secretaries from the Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Power and the Chairman of the Railway Board, meets regularly to closely review and assess coal supplies. Priority dispatching and allocation of coal rakes to power houses have also been accorded high importance.
Regulatory Compliance and Grid Reinforcement
To facilitate the smoother integration of renewable energy sources into the national electricity grid, specific mandates have been put in place. The "Central Electricity Authority (Flexible Operation of Coal based Thermal Power Generating Units) Regulations, 2023" was notified on January 30, 2023.These regulations require all coal-based thermal power generating units to maintain a minimum technical level of 40%. This operational standard must be adhered to according to the phasing plan set forth by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). CEA also monitors and permits any deferment of scheduled maintenance on a case-to-case basis, should increased demand necessitate it.
Complementing thermal capacity is the strategic use of energy storage solutions. To support generation during non-solar hours, 2,669 MW of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and 7,426 MW of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) have been commissioned to date. These systems are designed to store excess power generated during solar peak periods for later utilization.
