Coal India Limited Assures Supply Chain Amid Rise in Thermal Power Consumption

Coal India Limited (CIL) has addressed growing market apprehensions regarding coal supply, confirming that the company possesses sufficient reserves to meet increased daily coal consumption by the country’s thermal power plants.

Despite the sharp increase in daily coal usage across the sector, CIL stated that a substantial coal buffer exists to handle the escalating summer demand. The company highlighted the total available coal in the system amounts to 168 Million Tonnes (MT).

The company provided a detailed breakdown of the coal stocks available across various nodes, demonstrating systemic robustness.

Total Available System Coal168 MT

The inventory level at CIL’s own mine heads is particularly robust, remaining at 113.5 MT, which is sufficient to cover consumption for 19 days.

In addition to the current stockpiles, CIL confirmed that there is approximately 50 MT of in-situ mine coal available, which is ready for quick extraction and deployment should demand increase.

Operationally, the company is maintaining proactive communication with power producers. Of the 21 plants categorized under criticality (as of May 20), 11 are domestic coal-based plants, with 7 of these sourcing their coal directly from CIL. CIL has been corresponding with these power plants to ensure they build up adequate stocks well in advance of peak demand periods.

The company stressed that the observed compression of coal stock levels at coal-fired plants during the peak summer season is a natural pattern rather than an indication of a supply-side crisis. Management concluded that CIL maintains sufficient quantity to meet the generation capacity needs of domestic coal-based plants.

COALINDIA Stock Price Movement

Today, Coal India Limited shares edged higher to close at ₹458.55, reflecting a modest gain of ₹0.55 or 0.12%. The stock saw brisk trading volume in post-market activity, exchanging 14.21 million shares.
