Swiggy and Eternal Surge as Zepto IPO Valuation Crisis Reshapes Quick Commerce Landscape

The struggles faced by quick-commerce giant Zepto are rapidly shifting investor sentiment across India’s fast-moving consumer goods sector. As Zepto grapples with a steep valuation reset amid institutional resistance, listed rivals Swiggy and Industry leader Eternal are experiencing significant rallies, suggesting that market consolidation is on the horizon in this fiercely competitive space.

Zepto IPO Turmoil Triggers Valuation Reset

Zepto’s planned Initial Public Offering has met stiff opposition from domestic mutual funds and large institutional investors. These parties expressed concern over the company's excessive cash burn and its ambitious valuation expectations. The current discussion around Zepto’s IPO valuation ranges between $2.5 billion and $3 billion. This figure is substantially lower compared to the $7 billion valuation achieved during a previous funding round in October 2025, where Zepto raised $450 million in a fundraise led by Calpers.

Reports indicate that institutional investors found the sought pricing unacceptable. With the IPO draft validity period ending on Aug. 21, sources suggest that the issue may be deferred if the gap between management's expectations and investor demand does not narrow. While Zepto has not canceled the offering, its shares also registered a decline of over 20% in the week preceding the latest IPO discussions, signaling weakening investor appetite.

Swiggy and Eternal Rally on Competitive Advantage

For quick commerce players like Swiggy and Eternal, the funding pressure faced by a major competitor provides a potential opportunity to solidify their market positions. Swiggy shares have seen a surge of nearly 24% in July, aiming for its strongest monthly performance since listing in November 2024. Meanwhile, industry leader Eternal has advanced by 17%, marking its best monthly gain in over two years.

Analysts believe that the current situation highlights an increasingly divergent funding environment across the sector. While Zepto is under intense pressure to curtail cash burn, Swiggy appears willing and able to sustain spending for continued growth. This competitive dynamic suggests that if market divergence slows expansion for one player, the others stand to gain a larger share of India’s burgeoning quick commerce market.

Divergent Funding Paths in Quick Commerce

The competition in this industry is fierce, involving not only Zepto but also Amazon.com Inc.’s operations and Tata Group’s BigBasket. Zepto investor and Asmore CIO Rashi Talwar Bhatia pointed out that the company will need to focus on lowering its cash burn immediately. This shift typically results in lower growth rates and potential market share loss to established incumbents.

Bhatia further noted that this funding pressure could benefit Swiggy significantly, as the company emerging as the second-largest player would likely be the biggest beneficiary of the instability. Nomura analysts commented on Swiggy’s strategy following its June results, stating that Instamart "intends to trade margin for growth."

Sustained Losses and Cash Offset Strategy

Nomura expects cash losses within Swiggy's quick-commerce segment to persist until at least the fiscal year ending March 2028. However, the brokerage firm provided a vital counterpoint: these expected losses can be offset by using the substantial cash generated through its food delivery business. This suggests that while the sector faces clear paths of financial strain, companies with diversified revenues streams may possess a greater ability to sustain their growth bets compared to those solely focused on quick commerce operations.
