Steel Authority of India Limited Reports on Q1 FY'27 Performance Amid Global Market Shifts

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has released its financial and operational results for the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2027 (Q1 FY'27). The company’s performance is reported against a backdrop of evolving global economic trends and domestic industry growth.

Global Economic and Steel Scenario

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its World Economic Outlook released during July '26, has revised global projections for 2027 upwards, noting significant improvement in forecasts for Emerging and Developing Economies, even though estimates for Advanced Economies remain lower. The prevailing scenario in the Middle East remains a major factor impacting current year 2026 projections.

Regarding world steel production, the industry has seen a consistent decline each year since 2023, which registered only marginal growth. In the first five months of the current year, production fell by 1.5% compared to the Corresponding Period Last Year (CPLY). China continues to dominate global production, maintaining a share consistently above 50%, with its production standing at approximately 53.7% of global production during Jan-May CY'26. Although Chinese production declined by 3.8% over CPLY, several other major producers showed growth. Vietnam (26.8%), Germany (8.8%), India (7.7%), Turkey (6.8%), USA (6.8%), and South Korea (2.7%) all registered positive growth during the Jan-May CY'26 period compared to CPLY. Conversely, Russia (10.0%), Brazil (1.9%), and Japan (0.7%) showed negative growth during this time frame.

Indian Economic Outlook

The outlook for the Indian economy shows diverse projections from major financial agencies. COVID-19 Pandemic led to India's GDP sliding into a negative figure of -5.8% in FY'21. The Second Advance Estimates for FY'25 are at 6.5%, which is lower than earlier projections, while First Advance Estimates for FY'26 stand at 7.4%. Major agencies project future growth rates to be within the range of 6.4% to 7.2%, suggesting India remains among the fastest-growing major economies.

Key growth projections are summarized below:

IMF (Jul'26)6.4% for CY26 and 6.7% for CY27

RBI (Jun'26)6.6% for FY27, with quarterly projections of 6.6%, 6.3%, 6.5%, and 6.8% for Q1 through Q4 FY27 respectively

In terms of industrial performance, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) showed improvements in five out of six categories during the first two months of FY2026-27 compared to FY2024-25. This growth was primarily driven by Infrastructure Goods and Capital Goods. Consumer Non-durable and Primary Goods, however, registered only marginal growth over the previous year.
