US to Permanently Close Consulate in Peshawar, Ending Key Diplomatic Presence Near Afghan Border
State Department Notifies Congress of Decision
The United States will permanently close its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, a diplomatic mission that has long served as the closest American post to the Afghan border and played a crucial role during the US involvement in Afghanistan. The US State Department informed Congress this week about its intention to shut down the facility. According to the notification, the closure is expected to save the US government approximately $7.5 million annually while maintaining the country’s ability to pursue its national interests in Pakistan.
Closure Linked to Broader Government Downsizing
The decision to close the consulate has been under review for more than a year and stems from the Trump administration’s broader effort to reduce the size of federal agencies.Officials clarified that the move is unrelated to the ongoing war with Iran, which has triggered protests in several Pakistani cities including Karachi and Peshawar. During these protests, US consulates temporarily suspended operations as a precaution.
The State Department had already implemented significant reductions last year, including the dismissal of several thousand diplomatic personnel and the dismantling of the US Agency for International Development through large-scale staff layoffs.
First Overseas Diplomatic Mission Closed in Reorganization
The Peshawar facility will become the first overseas diplomatic mission to be shut down completely as part of the State Department’s restructuring process.Currently, the consulate employs 18 American diplomats and other US government personnel along with 89 locally hired staff members.
The State Department estimates the closure process will cost around $3 million. More than half of that amount, about $1.8 million, will be used to relocate armored trailers that have served as temporary office spaces at the mission.
Equipment and Operations to Move to Other US Missions
The remaining funds will be used to transfer the consulate’s vehicle fleet, electronic and telecommunications equipment, and office furniture. These assets will be relocated to the US Embassy in Islamabad and the remaining American consulates located in Karachi and Lahore.
Services to Shift to US Embassy in Islamabad
Due to its location near the Afghan border and the Afghan capital Kabul, the Peshawar consulate historically functioned as a logistical hub for overland travel into Afghanistan. It also served as a contact point for American citizens in northwestern Pakistan and for Afghan nationals seeking assistance from the United States.Following the closure, consular services for American citizens and other applicants will be handled by the US Embassy in Islamabad, which is located approximately 114 miles away.
The State Department stated in its notification that the shutdown will not affect the United States’ ability to assist citizens or oversee foreign assistance programs in Pakistan, as those responsibilities will continue to be managed by the embassy in Islamabad.
