Shein Plunges to Quarterly Loss as US Tariff Changes and Cost Pressures Weigh on Fast-Fashion Giant Ahead of IPO

Shein, the global fast-fashion powerhouse, reported a $99 million loss in the first quarter of 2026. This significant setback comes amid increasing operational costs and shifting market dynamics, as revealed in its draft prospectus filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange ahead of its highly anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The filing marks the first detailed public disclosure of Shein's financial performance to potential investors. While the company has demonstrated substantial annual revenue growth over the past three years, profitability remains under pressure. The Q1 loss was primarily attributed to a $328 million non-cash fair-value adjustment linked to convertible redeemable preferred shares meant for conversion upon listing.

Shifting Market Dynamics and Revenue Slowdown

While Shein maintained consistent overall revenue growth over multiple years, its momentum slowed in the first quarter of 2026. Total revenue for the quarter rose only 1.1% year-on-year to $9 billion. A key area of concern was the U.S. market, where revenue declined by 14%, reaching $2 billion.

The decline in the American market segment followed Washington's decision to remove a duty exemption on small packages. This particular market saw its contribution to total revenue fall from 26.6% one year prior down to 22.5%. Looking at a broader annual trend, the U.S.'s share of Shein's overall business dropped from 29.4% in 2023 to 24.1% by 2025.

Diversification and Growth in Global Markets

Geographically, Shein is showing steady diversification outside of the United States. Europe has solidified its status as a major market for the company. Revenue from the European region climbed significantly from $10.2 billion in 2023 to $14.8 billion in 2025, representing 35.4% of total net revenue.

The "Rest of the World" segment also saw considerable expansion. Revenue in this area increased from $12.4 billion in 2023 to $16.9 billion in 2025. This growth lifted the Rest of the World's share of total revenue, rising from 38.8% to 40.5%.

Operating Margins and Revenue Composition

Profitability metrics faced a decline during the latest quarter as operating costs continued to rise faster than sales volume. Operating profit fell by 26% year-on-year to $258 million. This pressure also caused the operating margin to narrow to 2.9%, down from 3.9% in the corresponding period last year.

Over recent years, Shein's operating margins have shown volatility, ranging from 4.3% in 2023 to 2.5% in 2024. Product sales remain the fundamental revenue driver, contributing $37.1 billion or nearly 90% of total revenue in 2025.

Service Revenue and Valuation Targets for IPO

A major positive shift is the expansion in service revenue. This area saw sharp growth, expanding from $868 million in 2023 to $4.7 billion in 2025. While apparel still dominates, its share of total revenue declined from 68.8% in 2023 to 63.8% in 2025.

Revenue generated from non-apparel products also demonstrated strong growth, rising from $10 billion to $15.1 billion over the same period. Prior valuation showed Shein at $98.2 billion during a 2022 fundraising round, before dropping to $64 billion two years later. The company is currently targeting a valuation of $40 billion to $50 billion in its planned Hong Kong IPO.
