Sensex and Nifty Surge as Better Earnings Negate Oil Price Woes in Strong Weekly Close

Indices Climb Amid Robust Earnings Signals and Lower Volatility

India's key equity indices ended the week and marked a positive trend for July, logging their biggest monthly gains in three months. Both the Nifty and the Sensex saw significant gains on Friday as markets digested better-than-expected corporate earnings. This strength helped balance lingering concerns over global geopolitical uncertainty and elevated oil prices.

The BSE Sensex closed at 78,094.64, rising by 166.49 points or 0.2%. The Nifty index finished at 24,383.6, gaining 66.45 points or 0.3%. These impressive movements saw both indices climb over 2.5% during the current week and advance nearly 2.1% in July alone.

Market Participants Remain Cautiously Optimistic on Earnings

Analysts noted that the earnings season provided a considerable boost to market sentiment, even amidst a quarter marked by raw material costs and multiple disruptions. Globe Capital Market’s Gaurav Sharma stated that while they remain wary of oil prices remaining above $80 per barrel and concerns regarding escalation in West Asia, the corporate performance has been better than anticipated.

The Nifty, however, continues to display market indecision despite closing higher for the week. It remains within a five-week trading band defined by 23,750 and 24,450. Hitesh Rathi of Angel One also noted that while the index has staged a strong recovery this week, it is currently confined to a broader range between 23,800 and 24,500.

FII Buying and Volatility Relief Drives sentiment

Investor flows showed robust domestic interest alongside foreign investment activity. Domestic institutions were net buyers, investing ₹2,260 crore during the day. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) also contributed to buying, netting in shares worth ₹277 crore on Friday. This represents the first instance of FPI purchasing since February.

The Nifty’s Volatility Index (VIX), a key gauge of market sentiment, fell by 3.3% to settle at 11.76 levels. The sustained drop indicated relief among traders after a period of 12.2% volatility decline over the last five sessions. This easing in uncertainty provides underlying support for the indices.

Sector Performance and Global Cues

The market saw strong performances across several segments, particularly within technology. The Nifty IT index recorded a substantial gain of 6.8% for the week. This growth occurred despite the Korean benchmark Kospi registering a net decline of 3.1%. Experts believe this suggests that the IT sector is delivering outcomes better than expected and is strongly positioned in the AI race.

Broader market markers also showed positive momentum, with the Nifty Midcap 150 gaining 0.5% and the Nifty Small-cap 250 rising by 0.4%. In terms of stock activity on the BSE, out of 4,425 stocks traded, 2,522 advanced while 1,722 declined at market close.

Global Markets and Future Triggers for a Rally

The movement in commodities and global indices provides mixed signals ahead for domestic equities. Brent crude futures were reported trading at $90 per barrel, up from the month’s starting price of $71.6. While Asia saw some positive movements—South Korea soared 17.9%, Japan gained 4% and Taiwan jumped 8%—the European Stoxx 600 was up 0.6%.

Despite strong earnings and eased volatility, the path to a definitive market recovery remains conditional. Technical analysts caution that unless the Nifty successfully breaks above the critical 24,500 level and sustains closure there, it is likely to remain range-bound. Furthermore, concerns persist as the Bank Nifty continues to face selling pressure, potentially limiting the broader market’s ability to achieve a meaningful recovery from current levels.
