RattanIndia Power Limited (RPL) reported a significant improvement in its financial performance for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (Q1 FY27). The company saw Total Income increase to Rs 876 Cr in Q1 FY27, up from Rs 864 Cr in Q4 FY26. Crucially, Profit After Tax (PAT) improved to Rs 44 Cr for the quarter, a marked contrast to a loss of Rs 15 Cr recorded in Q1 FY26.

The Amravati plant, operated by RPL, continues to exhibit strong operational efficiency. In Q1 FY27, the facility achieved a Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 92.43% and an Availability Factor (PAF) of 98.15%. This performance places the Amravati plant among the top performers nationally and within Maharashtra State. During the quarter, RPL received and unloaded 449 coal rakes, averaging 4.9 rakes daily.

In addition to revenue generated through the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the company successfully sold 17.99 MUs on the power exchange during Q1 FY27, which generated Rs 15.05 crore in additional revenue.

National and State Sector Trends

On a broader scale, India has demonstrated robust generation growth, with a compound annual growth rate of about 5% over the last 13 years. The growth rate saw an increase of 9.0% in Q1 FY27 compared to the corresponding period of Q1 FY26. Overall, the country recorded its highest ever generation in FY 26.

As of Q1 FY27, all India generation stood at 520 billion units (BUs). Renewable Energy Sources (RES), which includes Wind, Solar, Small Hydro, and Others, contributed 98 BUs, or approximately 19% of the total. The total installed RES capacity stands at 237 GW, representing about 43% of the total installed capacity of 549 GW. This underlines the continuing importance of thermal coal-based power plants as a backbone of electricity generation in India.

In Maharashtra State, there has been a substantial increase in both average maximum and minimum power demand during Q1 FY27.

Regulatory Dispute Resolution Progress

RPL is actively pursuing the recovery of regulatory receivables through legal forums. The company had previously sought direction from the MERC regarding "Change in Law" claims related to Ash Transportation and increases in Surface Transportation Charges (STC) and Sizing Charges levied by SECL, following notifications issued by Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries.

The Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), vide a judgment dated 08th May 2025 (modified on 15th May 2025), allowed the appeal of RPL. The tribunal determined that mandating 100% utilization of ash and the levied increases in charges constituted a "Change in Law."

Following this ruling, MSEDCL has filed a Civil Appeal against the matter with the Supreme Court since August 4, 2025. In the course of the quarter, MSEDCL paid Rs 44.73 Cr towards the Change in Law claim concerning Ash Transportation.
