PNB Surges 4% Amid Strong Q1 Gains While Bank Shares Face Volatility; VA Tech Bags Mega Infrastructure Contracts

The market is intensely focused on quarterly earnings and major corporate announcements today, with banking stocks attracting significant attention after reporting their June quarter results. While some banks posted robust profits, others saw share prices decline, signaling sector-specific investor reactions. Separately, VA Tech WABAG shares are rallying following the securing of several large water infrastructure contracts.

Banking Sector Earnings: A Tale of Two Performances

Punjab National Bank (PNB) shares surged 4% after announcing a powerful performance during the June quarter. The bank recorded a net profit that shot up 213.6% year-on-year, reaching ₹5,253.3 crore from ₹1,675 crore. PNB's Net Interest Income (NII) also rose 2.1% YoY to ₹10,798.4 crore.

The results for other major banks presented a mixed picture in the trading session. Axis Bank shares shed 5%, despite reporting strong Q1 earnings. The bank’s net profit increased by 22.5% YoY to ₹7,113.9 crore. Concurrently, Kotak Mahindra Bank fell 3%, even after posting solid results with its net profit rising 25.6% YoY.

HDFC Bank shares declined 4% in the market trading. Despite reporting a steady June quarter performance, HDFC Bank saw a decline in stock price. The bank’s net profit increased by 5% YoY to ₹19,059.7 crore.

Infrastructure Boom: VA Tech WABAG Jumps on Massive Water Contracts

VA Tech WABAG shares experienced a significant gain of over 4%. This surge is attributed to the company securing multiple crucial contracts with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).

The secured projects include the design, build, and operation (DBO) for a 100 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) at Byramangala. VA Tech was also awarded contracts for a 60 MLD STP in Bellandur and a 25 MLD tertiary treatment plant (TTP) at Byramangala.

These developments highlight the strong focus on infrastructure projects driving positive trading activity across specific sectors.

Market Outlook Driven by Company-Specific Developments

Investors are likely to remain intently focused on these companies throughout the session as they react to their earnings reports and corporate announcements. Company-specific developments, particularly in the form of brokerage upgrades or contract wins, are expected to continue driving specialized trading activity among investors.
