Banking Sector Jubilation: ICICI, Axis Bank Surge as Banks Report Strong Q1 Gains Amid Market Rally

Market Advance Despite Global Concerns

The Indian equity markets registered a strong advance on Friday, gaining over one percent despite subdued global cues. The performance was bolstered by positive corporate news and robust financial results from major banking institutions.

Analysts note that the Nifty has demonstrated renewed bullish interest after bouncing sharply from key support zones. Critically, technical analysis suggests that the index has breached the 24,300 resistance level, signaling potential for further upside momentum.

Banking Stocks Lead Gains: ICICI and Axis Bank Impress Investors

The banking sector saw considerable positive movement as several large private sector lenders announced healthy first-quarter results. The improved profitability across these institutions is a key driver of the broader market's buoyancy.

ICICI Bank reported a solid performance, announcing a 16% year-on-year (YoY) increase in its standalone net profit for the June quarter. This figure reached ₹14,805 crore, up from ₹12,768 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Furthermore, ICICI Bank recorded a 12.7% rise in Net Interest Income (NII), which stood at ₹24,384 crore compared to ₹21,635 crore a year ago. Axis Bank also reported impressive results, posting a standalone net profit of nearly ₹7,114 crore for the April-June quarter of FY27. This represents a 22.5% YoY rise from the ₹5,806 crore reported previously.

Diversified Corporate Results in Banking Sector

The performance was not confined to ICICI and Axis Bank; several other banks delivered notable Q1 results, reinforcing investor confidence in the financial services segment.

Kotak Mahindra Bank announced a standalone net profit of ₹4,123 crore for the April-June quarter of FY27. This marks a 26% YoY increase from the ₹3,282 crore net profit recorded during the corresponding period last year.

YES Bank also reported strong growth, achieving a standalone net profit of ₹1,070.99 crore for the April-June quarter of FY27. This figure reflects nearly a 34% YoY increase from the ₹801.07 crore posted in the prior corresponding quarter.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) saw a dramatic surge, reporting a net profit of ₹5,253 crore for the April-June quarter of FY27. This represents an astonishing nearly 214% YoY rise from the ₹1,675 crore net profit reported in the corresponding period last year.

Reliance and Britannia Update Stock Movement

In corporate headlines, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) faced a mixed verdict following its first-quarter reporting. RIL reported a 22% YoY decline in consolidated net profit at ₹20,946 crore. The decrease was attributed to an exceptional item related to the sale of Asian Paints stake in the comparable period last year, compared to the PAT of ₹26,994 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Meanwhile, Britannia Industries is intensifying its strategy by focusing on regionalization and localizing products. Managing Director and CEO Rakshit Hargave stated that these moves are aimed at competing more effectively against emerging regional players.

Outlook Ahead: Key Results Define Monday's Market Trajectory

Market sentiment heading into Monday will be heavily influenced by upcoming quarterly results from major corporate giants. The financial outcomes of Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank in early trade could significantly dictate the market's direction for the coming session.
