New Delhi, March 23 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasized that India is advocating dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the ongoing West Asia conflict, calling attacks on commercial ships and disruptions of the Strait of Hormuz unacceptable. He assured the Lok Sabha that the government is in touch with multiple suppliers to maintain oil and gas supplies.

Safety of Indians Abroad

Modi stated that every Indian in the war-affected region is being provided necessary assistance. He has spoken with West Asian heads of state, all of whom have ensured the safety of Indian citizens.

Energy and Fuel Security

To address concerns of fuel shortages, the Prime Minister said:
  • Strategic petroleum reserves (SPR) exceed 5.3 million metric tonnes, with plans for an additional 6.5 million tonnes.
  • Domestic oil companies maintain supplementary reserves.
  • All power plants have adequate coal stock, and India has produced over 1 billion tonnes of coal for the second consecutive year.
  • Oil and gas supply arrangements are ongoing with multiple countries.
He noted that attacks on civilian, energy, and transport infrastructure are unacceptable and emphasized India’s efforts to ensure the safe movement of Indian ships despite disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Food Security and Agriculture

Modi assured that food security is strong, with ample food grain reserves. The government has also made arrangements to ensure Kharif sowing and sufficient fertilizer supply for farmers, minimizing the impact of global crises.

Economic and Humanitarian Impact

The Prime Minister highlighted that the crisis affects economic, national security, and humanitarian aspects. Nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, and many Indian crew members operate commercial ships in the region.

India is committed to reducing supply disruptions of petrol, diesel, gas, and essential commodities and ensuring minimal impact on ordinary households.

Renewable Energy and Infrastructure

Modi also noted India’s progress in renewable energy and refining capacity, emphasizing that energy security measures are in place to meet the country’s growing needs amid global uncertainties.

India has always raised its voice for peace in the interest of humanity. Dialogue and diplomacy are the solutions to this problem,” he said.
