Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has underscored the need for a balanced and responsive World Trade Organization that addresses the priorities of all member nations, particularly developing countries and Least Developed Countries.Speaking during engagements at the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference held in Yaounde, Cameroon, Goyal highlighted the importance of ensuring that global trade systems remain inclusive and equitable.
Discussions with WTO Director-General
Goyal held discussions with WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, acknowledging her efforts in building consensus for a successful ministerial conference.In a statement shared on X, he appreciated her continued work in steering dialogue among member nations during MC14.
Appreciation for Cameroon’s Hosting of MC14
The minister also congratulated Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and Trade Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana for hosting the conference successfully.He noted his experience in Cameroon, highlighting the hospitality, culture, and landscapes of the country.
India-EU Trade Talks Gain Momentum
On the sidelines of the conference, Goyal met EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, where both sides discussed the MC14 agenda and reviewed progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.The discussions also focused on expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Both leaders agreed on the need for WTO reforms and exchanged views on key issues, including the moratorium on customs duties on electronic transmissions and the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement.
India-Canada CEPA Negotiations in Focus
Goyal also held talks with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, with discussions centered on expediting the ongoing India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations.Beyond the FTA framework, both countries agreed to develop a diversified sectoral engagement strategy. Key areas identified for cooperation include shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and education.
Sidhu also invited Goyal to visit Canada in May 2026, where he is expected to lead a major Indian business delegation.
Review of India-UK Trade Agreement Implementation
In another bilateral meeting, Goyal met UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter J. Kyle.Both sides reviewed the progress of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement signed in July 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Discussions also covered the broader MC14 agenda and ongoing trade cooperation efforts.
Focus on WTO Reforms and Global Trade Cooperation
Across bilateral engagements, a common theme remained the need for WTO reforms and strengthening global trade frameworks.India’s participation at MC14 reflects its continued push for a more inclusive international trade system, while advancing strategic economic partnerships with key global economies.
