Ola Electric Receives BIS Certification for Indigenous 46100 LFP Cell, Boosting India's Battery Manufacturing Prowess
Ola Cell Technologies (OCT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ola Electric, announced that it has secured Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification under IS 16046 (Part 2):2018 / IEC 62133-2:2017 for its indigenously developed LFP 46100 cylindrical cell. This achievement marks a critical milestone, making Ola Electric the first Indian company to receive BIS certification for an indigenous cell in the 46100 format and highlighting advancements in India's battery manufacturing capabilities toward energy independence. The successful qualification of the LFP 46100 cell extends Ola Electric's internal cell portfolio beyond its existing NMC 4680 Bharat Cells, establishing a qualified technology foundation for both future electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary energy-storage solutions. The certification also confirmed that the LFP 46100 has met stringent requirements under IS 16893 Parts 2 and 3 and UN 38.3 standards.
Advanced Testing and Technical Specifications
The development of the LFP 46100 cell involved significant localization across materials, components, engineering, and manufacturing processes. To obtain the BIS certification, the cells underwent rigorous safety, performance, and endurance tests conducted at a National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited laboratory. The comprehensive qualification tests included:
- Thermal abuse
- External short circuit
- Forced discharge
- Impact and crush assessments
- Altitude testing
- Abnormal charging and vibration
- Continuous low-rate charging
- Free fall and mechanical shock assessments
This certified platform is designed for demanding applications, offering an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg. Furthermore, the cell supports a development pathway toward more than 4,000 charge-discharge cycles and features broad operating-temperature capability.
Strengthening Domestic EV Ecosystem
The acquisition of BIS certification reinforces Ola Electric's commitment to building India's advanced EV and energy ecosystem. By expanding its in-house capabilities with the LFP 46100 technology, the company is strengthening the technological foundations required for accelerating EV adoption and supporting future energy storage solutions within India.Ola Electric has been steadily enhancing its indigenous battery technology through various means. The company's Gigafactory plays a crucial role in this long-term strategy. By developing both NMC and LFP technologies on a common 46-series architecture, Ola Electric is positioned to deploy the most suitable chemistry for different mobility and energy-storage needs, thereby increasing domestic value addition and reducing reliance on imported cell technologies.
The company has noted that thousands of vehicles powered by its 4680 Bharat Cells are currently operating in Indian conditions, collectively demonstrating millions of kilometres of real-world validation and underscoring the reliability of their advanced cell manufacturing scale within India.
