Oil Price Plunge Doesn't Mean Relief Yet: Check City-Wise Petrol and Diesel Rates After Geopolitical Easing

Fuel prices across India remained largely stable on Monday, July 6, registering minimal variations in specific cities. This stability comes despite a significant decline in international crude oil prices, which have retreated substantially after recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia began to ease. While the global market shows signs of relief, domestic fuel rates remain firmly set, pending continued long-term stabilization of international crude markets.

Global Crude Oil Trends and Geopolitical Shifts

The international benchmark Brent crude has erased much of its conflict-driven gains, posting one of its steepest quarterly declines since 2020. This price drop is primarily supported by improving geopolitical conditions globally. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, following a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran in mid-June, has restored confidence in vital maritime oil routes.

Further optimism was noted after recent talks held in Qatar focused on extending the temporary 60-day ceasefire into a longer-term agreement. Meanwhile, market sentiment remains cautious as concerns persist regarding potential supply surpluses due to OPEC+ signaling higher production levels through continued shipments via the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude traded near $72 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) hovered above $69.

Why Domestic Fuel Rates Have Not Been Reduced

Despite the evident decline in global crude prices, retail fuel rates are unlikely to be immediately reduced by state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs). Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that OMCs are currently refining higher-cost crude purchased during the peak of the West Asia conflict.

The minister clarified that a revision or reduction in retail fuel prices would only be seriously considered if international crude prices remain stable over an extended period. This cautious approach by authorities aims to manage commodity price volatility against domestic supply chain costs.
