Oil Plunges Over 4% as Trump Delays Strike on Iran in Push for Diplomatic Deal

Commodity markets traded with significant volatility on Monday, pivoting dramatically following news that U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed a planned military strike against Iran. This geopolitical shift triggered a sharp decline in crude oil prices while safe-haven assets like gold rallied higher amid easing immediate tensions.

Crude Oil Prices Tumble Amid De-escalation Efforts

Crude oil futures saw substantial declines after the delay of the anticipated U.S. attack on Tehran. The move reflects market expectations that diplomacy, rather than military action, is the intended path forward to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude futures slid significantly, falling $4.08, or 4.6%, settling at $83.85 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude experienced an even steeper drop, trading down $4.01, or 4.7%, to $80.66 a barrel.

These heavy declines contrast sharply with the activity seen in the prior month. Both Brent and WTI contracts had previously surged over 20% following the resumption of fighting between the U.S. and Iran, alongside heightened security concerns stemming from attacks on tankers near Oman.

Gold and Precious Metals Advance as Risk Premium Subsides

In contrast to the steep fall in oil prices, precious metals demonstrated resilience, gaining ground as concerns surrounding immediate inflation and higher interest rates were somewhat eased by the diplomatic maneuvering. Spot gold saw a modest rise of 0.7%, trading at $4,067.06 per ounce as of 0023 GMT.

U.S. gold futures also gained, climbing 0.9% to reach $4,065.60. The broader precious metal market saw gains across the board; silver rose 0.9% to $58.10 an ounce. Platinum and palladium metals also posted advanced trading figures on Monday.

Currency Markets See Dollar Drop Against Yen

The currency markets witnessed a notable shift, with the dollar suddenly experiencing a decline against the Japanese yen. This drop reverses gains that had been recorded earlier during the trading session.

Traders remain keenly attentive as this movement puts focus on potential intervention by financial authorities to support and stabilize the value of the Japanese currency amid the volatility.
