Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities Fined Rs 1 Lakh by CCPA Over '100% Atta' Labeling Claim
Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities Ltd has received a penalty from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) concerning the use of the descriptor "100% whole wheat" on its bread products. The concerned authority imposed a fine of Rs 1 Lakh on the company, referencing an order dated June 9, 2026.The penalty relates to the packaging claim found on products labeled as '100% Atta Bread' or '100% Whole Wheat Bread'. Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities Ltd stated that it is currently pursuing legal advice and plans to file an appeal against the CCPA order before the appropriate authority under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The company defended its usage by explaining that the CCPA misinterpreted the language. The firm argued that the expression '100% Atta' was used strictly as a flour-source assurance to convey that the bread contained whole wheat flour as the sole source and did not contain maida or any substitute cereal flour.
In relation to packaging compliance, Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities also noted that it had fully disclosed the ingredient list on the products and maintained an approximate Atta content of 87%, which is above the prescribed minimum threshold of 75% for Atta/Whole Wheat Bread.
The company confirmed that there is no material or financial impact of this matter, as it has already communicated to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This communication, dated May 9, 2026, informed FSSAI that the company would voluntarily discontinue the use of the descriptor '100% Atta' from its bread product packaging in a phased manner within a six-month period.
The company also assured stakeholders that it is committed to promptly informing exchanges and authorities regarding all material events and actions going forward.
