Motherson Commissions First Captive Solar Project in Uttar Pradesh for Industrial Decarbonization
Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (Motherson) has commissioned its inaugural ground-mounted captive solar power project in Uttar Pradesh. This development is part of the Group's broader strategy to transition towards clean energy and reduce its industrial carbon footprint. The facility, developed through Motherson New Energy Limited (MNEL) and its subsidiary Onega Solar Private Limited, is located in Mahoba. The 15 MWp solar plant is set to supply renewable energy to various Motherson manufacturing facilities across Uttar Pradesh.
This project represents a significant move towards sustainable operations for the Group. It is anticipated that the solar plant will generate approximately 23.4 GWh of renewable electricity annually, which translates to a reduction of around 17000 MT of CO₂ emissions each year. This initiative aims not only to lower the carbon intensity of Motherson's manufacturing but also to improve operational resilience and ensure long-term energy cost visibility.
The development was undertaken in partnership with ib vogt, an international renewable energy development company. Ib vogt supported the project during its developmental phase, assisting with land acquisition, regulatory approvals, technical designing, and EPC execution.
Executive leadership commented on the strategic importance of the commissioning. Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, Vice Chairman of the Motherson Group, stated that the first captive solar project in Uttar Pradesh is a vital milestone in strengthening energy resilience while reducing environmental impact, reflecting the commitment to responsible growth.
Kunal Vohra, COO of Energy Business at the Motherson Group, noted that reliable access to competitively priced renewable power is essential for global manufacturing operations. The project establishes a foundation for scaling Motherson's renewable energy portfolio and supporting long-term sustainability goals.
Parish Gupta, CEO & Managing Director of ib vogt Solar India, expressed delight over the partnership, stating that the project reflects a shared commitment to accelerating industrial decarbonization through reliable and commercially viable renewable energy solutions.
The commissioned solar plant aligns with Motherson's wider sustainability ambitions, which include reducing carbon intensity across operations and supporting global customers in their own decarbonisation efforts. This move also strengthens the Group’s energy diversification strategy by providing long-term access to cost-competitive clean power. MNEL continues to evaluate potential renewable energy opportunities across various states as part of the company's long-term transition roadmap.
