
Maruti Suzuki Inaugurates Advanced Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in Kharkhoda; Invests INR 35,000 Crore
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has significantly marked a milestone in its four-decade journey in India by launching its most advanced vehicle manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda, Haryana. The inauguration event took place during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum at New Delhi and was conducted via video conferencing, attended by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Ms. Sanae Takaichi.The facility is built on the 'Suzuki Smart Factory' concept and Industry 5.0 principles, designed to enhance safety, quality, and productivity while minimizing energy consumption. The land parcel for this operation spans 800 acres and includes an integrated supplier park.
Scaling Production and Investment Commitment
This state-of-the-art plant is poised to make a substantial impact on the company's growth trajectory and global standing. At full operational capacity, the Kharkhoda facility is projected to produce up to one million units annually. The total investment committed for this facility is INR 35,000 crore.The completion of this project contributes significantly to MSIL’s broader ambition of achieving a four million unit annual production capacity. This new facility alone is expected to create over 21,000 jobs when fully operational.
Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), highlighted the significance of the event. He stated that this launch underscores the success of the India-Japan partnership and the Make in India initiative. Mr. Suzuki noted that with favourable policy support under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Suzuki is accelerating investments in employment, exports, and technology to contribute to the journey toward Viksit Bharat.
Commitment to Sustainability and Advanced Manufacturing
The Kharkhoda facility integrates multiple sustainable practices and advanced manufacturing technologies:- Renewable Energy: 100% of the facility's electricity requirement is met through renewable energy, combining solar power and green power procurement. The plant currently has an installed solar capacity of 20 MWp, which is planned to scale up significantly to 70 MWp by 2030.
- Resource Management: The facility operates as a zero liquid discharge plant, ensuring 100% water recycling. Nearly two-thirds of the overall water requirement is sourced from recycled water and rainwater harvesting.
- Technology Integration: The plant incorporates Industry 5.0 practices, including Human-aware collaborative robots (COBOTS), enabling seamless collaboration between human workers and machinery to meet global quality benchmarks.
Manufacturing Footprint and Skill Development
In addition to the advanced manufacturing operations, Maruti Suzuki is enhancing its operational capabilities by establishing an in-plant railway siding at the Kharkhoda facility, mirroring similar setups at Manesar (Haryana) and Hansalpur (Gujarat).The company is also committed to creating a skilled workforce through collaborative initiatives. Maruti Suzuki has established four Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIMs), working with the Governments of India and Japan. To date, 2600 students have been trained across these JIMs. The organization plans to introduce student hostel facilities at JIM Sonipat and Manesar to support residential training needs.
