Manipal Health Shares Slide 6% Amid Profit Booking; Experts Weigh Valuation vs Growth Trajectory

Manipal Health Enterprises, which witnessed a strong debut on Wednesday, saw its shares dip nearly 6% to hit an intraday low of Rs 626 on Thursday, down from the previous close of Rs 666 on the BSE. The stock had listed at Rs 655, marking a significant premium of nearly 11% over its issue price of Rs 590. This listing performance significantly outperformed grey market expectations, where the stock was anticipated to gain around 1%.

IPO Performance and Current Stock Correction

The company's highly successful Rs 9,275 crore IPO witnessed a subscription rate of 4.92 times overall. The public issue comprised a fresh issue of 13.56 crore equity shares valued at Rs 8,000 crore, coupled with an offer for sale of 2.16 crore shares aggregating Rs 1,275.22 crore. Despite the stellar debut performance, some analysts are now cautioning over potential valuations and profit booking.

Financial Structure and Corporate Plans

Manipal Health is set to utilize a substantial portion of the IPO proceeds towards strengthening its financial health. Approximately Rs 5,378 crore from the IPO funds will be allocated for debt repayment, which aims to improve the balance sheet and reduce borrowing costs. An additional Rs 574 crore is planned for acquiring a minority stake in Sahyadri Hospitals, a step-down subsidiary.

The company has ambitious growth plans outlined between FY26 and FY30, planning to add 2,426 beds. This expansion includes 1,943 through greenfield projects and 483 through brownfield augmentation. SBI Securities expects profitability to improve following the Sahyadri Group integration and lower interest costs achieved through debt reduction utilizing 69% of the IPO proceeds.

Analyst Views: Buy vs Caution on Valuation

The outlook for Manipal Health remains polarized among financial advisors, driven by differing assessments of its current premium valuation. Swastika Investmart noted that while the listing was positive, the stock is currently trading at a high premium with limited margin of safety. The firm advised fresh investors to wait for better entry points or signs of further debt reduction before investing.

SBI Securities maintains a "Subscribing for long term" rating on the company. They highlight Manipal Health as India's largest multi specialty healthcare provider by bed capacity and commend its track record in strategic acquisitions that have improved operating leverage and expanded geographical presence. Founded in 2010, the enterprise provides advanced tertiary and quaternary care across key specialties including cardiology, oncology, and neurology.

Risks and Path Ahead for Investors

Angel One, however, believes the company's valuation is stretched. At the upper price band of Rs 590, Angel One values the issue at a post-issue FY26 P/E of 84.65x, deeming it expensive. While acknowledging the company's strong pan-India hospital network and leadership in key markets, this brokerage believes much of the expected growth is already priced into the stock.

A point of caution raised by Swastika Investmart relates to revenue concentration, noting that nearly 46–60% of the company's revenue depends on Karnataka. The firm recommends maintaining a stop-loss at Rs 620 for existing shareholders to protect their listing gains, advising continued holding otherwise.
