Manipal Health IPO: GMP Holds at 2% as Investors Debate Value vs. Long-Term Growth Potential

Manipal Health Enterprises' massive ₹9,275 crore Initial Public Offering (IPO) entered its second day of bidding amidst cautious market sentiment. While the Grey Market Premium (GMP) indicates modest optimism, investors are currently faced with a crucial decision: weigh the company’s robust healthcare fundamentals against a potentially premium valuation.

The IPO, backed by institutional players like Temasek and veteran entrepreneur Ranjan Pai, is being closely watched as it moves towards its likely listing date on August 5, 2026. The issue includes fresh equity shares and an Offer for Sale (OFS) from several major stakeholders.

Day One Subscription Status: Where Does Manipal Health Stand?

The IPO registered a 15% subscription rate across all investor categories on Day 1, highlighting cautious participation.

Details of the offering stand as follows:
  • Retail Individual Investors (RIIs): Subscribed at 25% against the 1.64 crore shares reserved.
  • Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs): Showed a subscription rate of 5% against the 2.46 crore share allocation.
  • Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs): Achieved 14% subscription against the 4.87 crore shares reserved.

The issue size totals ₹9,275.22 crore, with a fixed price band set at ₹560–₹590 per share. Retail investors can apply in lots of 25 shares, requiring a minimum investment of ₹14,750 at the upper price band.

Grey Market Premium and Valuation Indicators

The current market sentiment is reflected by the unofficial grey market, which pegs Manipal Health Enterprises with a GMP of approximately ₹9. This corresponds to an estimated listing price of ₹599, positioned roughly 2% above the upper end of the issue’s price band (₹590).

It is essential to note that the grey market remains an unofficial and unregulated indicator of sentiment, not a guarantee of actual performance on the listing day.

Company Strength: Operations and Future Capex

Established in 2010, Manipal Health Enterprises stands as one of India's prominent healthcare providers, managing a extensive network of multi-specialty hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers across the country. As of March 31, 2026, the company operates 49 hospitals with 13,037 licensed beds and 21 clinics.

The strategic use of IPO proceeds is designed to significantly fortify the balance sheet. The company plans to deploy ₹5,378 crore from the fresh issue to repay debt, thereby reducing interest costs. An additional ₹574 crore will be used to acquire a minority stake in its step-down subsidiary, Sahyadri Hospitals, with remaining funds allocated toward general corporate purposes and future growth initiatives.

Expert Consensus: A Mixed Verdict on Investor Returns

Brokerages offer divergent views on the IPO. While some see immense long-term promise, others caution that much of this potential may already be priced into the stock.

SBI Securities recommends 'Subscribe,' emphasizing Manipal Health’s leadership in the multi-specialty hospital segment and its planned expansion strategy, which includes adding over 2,400 beds by FY30 alongside expected margin improvements post debt reduction. Similarly, Anand Rathi Research has maintained a 'Subscribe for Long Term' rating.

Conversely, Arihant Capital and Angel One have assigned a 'Neutral' rating. They argue that while the company’s business fundamentals are strong, the current valuation—noting it at around 85.4x FY26 earnings—suggests diminishing near-term gains. Other firms like Axis Capital and Sushil Finance echo this caution, highlighting the premium valuations as a potential limiter for quick listing profits.
