Mango Exports Surge: First Commercial Sea Shipment to Singapore Nearly Doubles Farmers' Income
In a significant milestone for India's agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial sea shipment of premium Banganapalle mangoes destined for Singapore. This successful consignment marks a critical step in promoting cost-effective and sustainable logistics for high-quality Indian horticultural produce. The export initiative was a joint effort between APEDA and the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow. M/s Osum Food Solutions LLP handled the shipment, which consisted of 5 metric tonnes (MT) of premium Banganapalle mangoes. The consignment departed on June 11, 2026, and successfully arrived in Singapore by June 24, 2026.
APEDA Facilitates Prime Mango Export to Singapore
The operational success underscores the stringent quality control mechanisms in place for Indian produce. The Banganapalle mangoes were sourced from Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified orchards located in Andhra Pradesh. They were subsequently processed and packed at an APEDA-recognized facility in Karnataka. The entire shipment meticulously adhered to the specific phytosanitary requirements set by Singapore. EC-Links Pte Ltd, the importer in Singapore, provided positive feedback upon arrival. The importer appreciated the mangoes for their uniform ripening, sweetness, excellent fruit quality, and overall cold-chain integrity.
Sea Freight Boosts Farmers' Income by Near-Doubling Domestic Prices
The commercial value realized from this international market significantly benefited Indian growers. While domestic market prices for Banganapalle mangoes were trading between ₹25 and ₹26 per kilogram, the export consignment achieved approximately ₹50 per kilogram. This difference means that farm-gate returns for growers saw a substantial enhancement by nearly doubling due to efficient global market access. The successful transaction highlights the immense economic potential locked within specialized international trade channels for high-quality agricultural products.
Strengthening Global Competitiveness through Cold Chain Logistics
The shipment's viability proves the growing importance of sea freight as a commercially scalable and environmentally sustainable transport mode for fresh fruits. Robust cold-chain infrastructure, combined with scientific handling practices, proved crucial in maintaining quality during maritime transit.APEDA has been aggressively promoting sea freight usage through targeted market development initiatives. This focus aims to provide exporters with the necessary capacity building measures to meet demanding international quality standards.
Banganapalle, renowned for its fibreless pulp and rich aroma, is a variety enjoying strong international demand. The shipment’s success serves as a powerful encouragement for wider adoption of maritime transport by other domestic growers.
The initiative aligns directly with the Government of India's objectives to boost agricultural exports and expand the global footprint of Indian produce through sustainable and efficient pathways. This successful demonstration strengthens India's reputation as a reliable supplier in critical global markets.
