Kolkata Metro Adopts ABB Electrification and Motion Control Solutions to Boost Efficiency and Safety
Kolkata Metro, India's first metro railway established in 1984, has partnered with ABB to significantly enhance the efficiency, reliability, and safety of its expanding urban transit network. The partnership involves deploying advanced electrification and motion-control solutions across key infrastructure facilities within the system. The 72-km metro system currently operates over 300 train trips daily, serving more than half a million passengers, contributing substantially to alleviating traffic congestion and promoting sustainable mobility in Kolkata.
A comprehensive range of ABB Electrification solutions has been deployed throughout the network. These systems include low-voltage and medium voltage gas-insulated switchgear, distribution boards, lightning protection systems, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). These technologies are designed to optimize space, support efficient operations, reduce downtime, and enable safe ventilation across stations and tunnels.
In addition to electrification, ABB Motion's HVAC-dedicated packaged drives have been installed to manage critical cooling and ventilation infrastructure. These solutions enhance passenger comfort and safety during daily operations, while also facilitating smoke extraction functions in emergencies, leading to an average energy saving of 25 percent.
The scope of operation for Kolkata Metro is detailed below:
| Metric | Detail |
|---|---|
| System Length | 72 km |
| Daily Train Trips | Over 300 |
| Passengers Served | More than half a million |
Various ABB solutions have been engineered and installed across specific corridors and facilities, catering to the infrastructure requirements of different locations. These include stations such as Sealdah-Phoolbagan, Joka-Majerhat, Barun Sengupta-Nazrul Tirtha, Airport, Shahid Khudiram station, and Blue Line corridors. Deployments were also made at Dakshineswar, Baranagar, Metro Railway Bhavan, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar, the city's largest underground metro station.
Kiran Dutt, President - Electrification at ABB India, highlighted the growing need for highly efficient and intelligent solutions as India advances toward a low-carbon, smart urban transit model. He noted that ABB’s broad technology portfolio is assisting customers across 80% of the nation's metro rail networks. Over the past 25 years, ABB has provided close partnership to Kolkata Metro, equipping its network with future-ready products and solutions, supported by local manufacturing and innovations under the 'Make in India' initiative.
ABB continues to provide global technology leadership in electrification and automation, supporting resource efficiency and high performance across industries.
