Jupiter Wagons and Lucchini RS Forge Strategic Partnership to Build India's First Integrated Private-Sector Railwheel Manufacturing Platform

Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL), a provider of mobility solutions and railway engineering products, has announced a landmark strategic partnership with Lucchini RS Holding S.p.A. (LRS), a leading manufacturer of railway wheels and axles. This collaboration aims to establish India's first fully integrated private-sector railwheel manufacturing platform, strengthening industrial cooperation between India and Italy.

The partnership involves LRS acquiring a 15% equity stake in Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Limited (JTRWF). SIMEST S.p.A., an Italian government financial institute backed by the Sistema Italia framework, will acquire an additional 10% stake. These combined stakes, totaling 25%, represent a combined stake consideration of approximately €28 million.

The investment is intended to create a long-term industrial partnership that combines JWL’s expertise in India's railway manufacturing ecosystem with Lucchini RS’s global recognition and excellence in advanced railwheel technology and engineering. The venture seeks to strengthen domestic rail manufacturing capabilities, positioning the country as a competitive hub for high-value railway components.

The transaction is supported by the Government of Italy and involves SIMEST as an equity investor. This initiative also benefits from the support of the Italian Embassy in India, underscoring its strategic importance for advancing bilateral industrial cooperation.

Integrated Manufacturing Plan

JTRWF’s integrated manufacturing platform will span multiple stages, addressing both existing operations and future expansion. The current operational facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) handles machining and wheelset assembly. A state-of-the-art greenfield manufacturing complex is currently under development in Odisha.

The upcoming Odisha facility is set to house critical upstream capabilities, including forging, primary metallurgy, and wheel manufacturing. This will allow for end-to-end production of railway wheels, axles, and wheelsets. Once operational, the platform aims to be India's sole fully integrated private-sector railwheel manufacturing platform.

The partnership benefits from established growth fundamentals. Lucchini RS will provide advanced technology, engineering expertise, and industrial support throughout the development and commissioning process. Concurrently, JWL provides a strong anchor customer base through its in-house demand for wheelsets, ensuring commercial sustainability.
