Industry Strength Validates Affordable Healthcare Promise
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, stated that India’s pharmaceutical sector embodies the nation's commitment to providing affordable, quality healthcare worldwide. Addressing the Global Ambassador Meet in New Delhi, Shri Goyal linked this mission to India's civilisational ethos, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the vision of "One Earth, One Health."The Minister highlighted that Indian medicine has garnered global trust due to established manufacturing capabilities and stringent quality standards. He recalled the COVID-19 pandemic response, noting that India not only secured domestic requirements but also supplied vital medicines and vaccines across numerous countries, especially in emerging economies.
Significant Growth and Market Reach Achieved
Shri Goyal provided concrete figures illustrating the industry's rapid expansion. Pharmaceutical exports have increased significantly from approximately USD 14 billion in FY 2014-15 to roughly USD 31 billion in FY 2025-26. These medicines now reach patients across over 200 countries globally.While generic medicines remain a core strength, the Minister noted that the sector is rapidly transitioning towards innovation-driven growth. He confirmed that India is perfectly positioned to serve the global community as an innovator and a reliable supplier of affordable advanced healthcare technologies.
Ambitious $50 Billion Export Target by 2030
Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal outlined the long-term ambition for the industry, stating India aims to achieve USD 50 billion in pharmaceutical exports by 2030. This target will be driven by a continuous focus on quality, innovation, regulatory excellence and market diversification.The domestic infrastructure supporting this goal is robust. There are over 10,500 manufacturing units and more than 60,000 generic brands spanning 60 therapeutic categories across the country. Shri Agrawal also noted that international confidence in Indian standards is high, with over 60 per cent of pharmaceutical exports destined for highly regulated markets.
Focus on Innovation and International Collaboration
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Shri Jitin Prasada underscored the essential role of global cooperation in building resilient health systems. He stressed that stronger international partnerships and enhanced regulatory alignment are key to improving public health outcomes globally and ensuring medicine accessibility.The Minister invited foreign companies to invest, manufacture, and collaborate within India, noting the sector's growing focus on advanced technologies and higher-value product research. This robust ecosystem makes India a prime destination for contract manufacturing in pharmaceuticals.
Pharma Sector Highlights Global Engagement Events
The meeting witnessed participation from diplomats and representatives of 98 countries, reaffirming international commitment to partnership. The events showcased include iPHEX 2026, set for Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from 7-9 September 2026. This major industry event expects over 700 exhibitors and around 25,000 domestic visitors.Additionally, the Curtain Raiser for the Global Drug Regulatory Conclave 2026 was launched, which is scheduled for 30-31 July 2026. This conclave aims to gather global regulators and policymakers to discuss regulatory convergence and mutual reliance mechanisms in pharmaceutical regulation.
