Indian Railways (IR) is undergoing a comprehensive modernization drive, transitioning from traditional rail transport to a highly advanced ecosystem of high-speed corridors, AI-driven safety systems, and diverse passenger services. This massive infrastructural overhaul underscores IR's commitment to national economic integration and inclusive mobility for all sections of society. The railway network is seeing rapid expansion through indigenously developed train sets across multiple classes—from luxury Vande Bharat Expresses to affordable Amrit Bharat trains.

Revolutionizing Passenger Travel with Multi-Tiered Train Services​

The Indian Railways has introduced specialized rail services designed to meet the diverse needs and economic profiles of millions of passengers. Currently, there are 162 Vande Bharat (Chair Car) train services operating across the network, providing fast, comfortable travel supported by advanced features like Jerk-Free Semi-Permanent couplers and CCTV surveillance in all coaches.

For budget-conscious travelers, IR has rolled out 36 pairs of Amrit Bharat Express services. These non-AC modern trains enhance comfort for low- and middle-income families with improved aesthetics, enhanced safety standards, and amenities such as USB Type-A and Type-C mobile charging sockets. Furthermore, the two Vande Bharat Sleeper train services cater to long distance travel, incorporating features like a regenerative braking system and crashworthy design compliant with EN standards.

Pushing Boundaries with High Speed Rail and Green Energy​

IR is not just upgrading existing routes; it is building the future of transit. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, spanning 508 km across Gujarat and Maharashtra, has seen significant progress. All land (1389.5 Ha.) has been acquired and statutory clearances obtained, with work ongoing on key civil structures including piers (452 kms.), girder (356 kms.), and track bed (209 kms.).

In a monumental step toward sustainable transit, Indian Railways introduced the "NaMo Green Rail," the nation's first hydrogen train. This 10-coach, 2400 kW set is currently the world’s longest and most powerful Hydrogen Train-set on the Broad Gauge platform, boasting zero CO₂ emissions with water vapour as the sole exhaust.

Technology Integration: AI and Signalling Modernization​

The integration of cutting-edge technology has fundamentally enhanced railway safety and operational efficiency. Several advanced systems are actively deployed across IR. The Machine Vision Inspection System (MVIS), which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), alerts staff to any loose or missing components on moving trains. Similarly, the Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD) inspects rolling stock by measuring wheel-track impact.

Modernization of signaling infrastructure is proceeding rapidly across the network. As of 30.06.2026, Electrical/Electronic Interlocking Systems have been provided at 6671 stations. Furthermore, Kavach, an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, has successfully commissioned on 2,490 Route Kilometres, covering high-density Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.

Infrastructure Expansion: From Stations to Bridges​

IR is systematically improving its physical infrastructure through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, targeting a nationwide upliftment of railway hubs. Out of 1340 identified stations for redevelopment, 261 stations have been successfully completed or are under development across various cities and junctions.

The commitment to road safety is also evident in the significant expansion of Road over Bridges (ROBs) and Road under Bridges (RUBs). While 4,148 ROBs/RUBs were constructed between 2004-2014, IR has managed 14,451 such structures up to May 2026. Additionally, 4,993 ROB/RUB works are currently sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹ 1,17,492 Cr., with prioritization based on operational safety and road user impact.

Strategic Future Planning and Track Upgrades​

The government has announced the development of seven new High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridors in the Union Budget 2026-27, including routes such as Mumbai - Pune and Delhi - Varanasi. These projects are moving forward with critical infrastructure preparation, utilizing state-of-theart methods like full-span launching for large girders.

On the track level, continuous upgrades are being implemented using modern materials and processes. Primary track renewals now utilize 90 Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) rails and Pre-stressed Concrete Sleepers (PSC). Safety is paramount, with advanced techniques such as Flash Butt Welding adopted for rails and the deployment of a Rail Turnover Prevention Device (RTPD) to enhance safety during derailments.
