Indian Railways Surges with 4% Freight Growth and Massive Expansion of Modern Passenger Services

Indian Railways reported robust operational performance in June 2026, cementing its role as a core driver of national economic momentum. The state-owned giant registered steady growth across both freight movement and passenger traffic. This twin surge underscores sustained investments aimed at strengthening logistics chains while simultaneously enhancing travel convenience for the masses.

Freight Loading Registers Robust Growth Across Core Sectors

Indian Railways successfully loaded 142.21 million tonnes of freight in June 2026, marking a significant 4 per cent increase compared to the previous year's figure of 136.71 million tonnes. This strong operational performance contributed positively to revenue, with freight earnings generating an additional ₹430 crore, which represents a 3 per cent growth over June 2025.

Key economic sectors were reflected strongly in the cargo movement for the month. Fertilizer loading saw a substantial increase of 19.1 per cent. Balance Other Goods (BOB) also exhibited strong demand, growing by 17.3 per cent, while Iron Ore loading rose by 9.4 per cent.

The momentum is not limited to June alone. During the first quarter of FY 2026-27, Indian Railways handled a considerable 419.08 million tonnes of freight, surpassing the 413.05 million tonnes recorded in Q1 of FY 2025-26. Additionally, coal supply to power plants stepped up by 7 per cent in June 2026, ensuring uninterrupted power generation across the country.

Passenger Mobility Demonstrates Steady Upward Trend

Passenger traffic continued its positive trajectory during June 2026. Indian Railways transported a total of 63.81 crore passengers, showing steady growth compared to the 62.37 crore travelers recorded in the corresponding month last year. This consistent increase highlights growing national mobility and demand for reliable rail travel.

The performance was diversified across different segments. The Non-Suburban segment, which covers all short and long-distance journeys, saw passenger numbers climb from 28.90 crore to 30.04 crore, reflecting a solid 3.9 per cent growth. The Suburban segment also recorded positive momentum, rising by 0.9 per cent to reach 33.77 crore passengers.

Augmentation of Premium Passenger Services Boosts Connectivity

Indian Railways is actively modernizing the passenger experience through continuous service expansion and technological upgrades. The network now boasts a total of 164 Vande Bharat services, including the newly introduced Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya.

Service diversification continued with the Amrit Bharat train portfolio reaching 72 services. Four new Amrit Bharat services were specifically inaugurated during June 2026, further enhancing affordable and modern connectivity across the country’s long-distance routes.

The continuous growth in freight handling capacity coupled with significant advancements in premium passenger offerings demonstrates Indian Railways' unwavering commitment to supporting India's economic trajectory. The network continues to deliver safe, reliable, and customer-centric transportation services nationwide.
