Jindal Stainless Supplies Steel for India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train

Jindal Stainless, a leading stainless steel manufacturer in India, has contributed significantly to the development of India's first hydrogen-powered train. The company supplied approximately 40% of the total stainless steel requirement for the construction of the coach bodies.

The project utilizes premium austenitic stainless steel grade X5CrNi1810, which was exclusively supplied by Jindal Stainless from its Jajpur and Hisar plants. This hydrogen-powered train, featuring a specialized propulsion system, marks a major milestone in the Indian Railways' pursuit of green mobility solutions and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Material Advantages for Green Mobility

Stainless steel has become the preferred material for modern railway coaches due to several key properties:
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Crash-worthiness
  • High strength-to-weight ratio
  • Fire and impact resistance
  • Durability and recyclability

The lightweight characteristics of the metal enhance energy efficiency, making it a critical component for emerging technologies like hydrogen-powered trains. This material helps reduce lifecycle costs while improving operational performance in high-speed rail and metro systems.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, emphasized that the future of mobility depends on cleaner energy sources combined with advanced materials that ensure efficiency and durability. He noted that stainless steel has consistently demonstrated its value in railway applications through its safety and lifecycle performance.

A Long-Standing Partnership with Indian Railways

Jindal Stainless has maintained a relationship with Indian Railways for over three decades. The company has supplied material for several landmark projects, including:
  • The first LHB coaches
  • Vande Bharat Sleeper
  • India's first Vande Metro train
  • Corrosion-resistant stainless steel salt containers for freight transportation

The continued adoption of stainless steel reflects its role in providing safe and sustainable infrastructure as India develops next-generation transport systems.
