India and US Pause Talks to Assess Legal and Policy Implications

New Delhi, February 22: India and the United States have decided to reschedule their official meeting on the proposed interim bilateral trade agreement, as both sides move to assess the implications of a recent US Supreme Court ruling that struck down key tariff measures introduced by President Donald Trump.

The three day meeting between teams led by the chief trade negotiators of India and the US was initially scheduled to begin in Washington on February 23. The discussions were aimed at finalising the text of the interim trade pact between the two countries.

However, according to reliable sources, the visit of the Indian delegation will now take place after both governments have completed their review of the developments arising from the Supreme Court judgment. A senior official confirmed that a new date for the meeting will be decided at a mutually convenient time.

US Supreme Court Invalidates Key Trump Tariff Measures

The rescheduling follows a significant ruling by the US Supreme Court on Friday, which invalidated several of President Donald Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariff measures.

US Supreme Court, in a 6 to 3 verdict, held that the executive branch had exceeded its constitutional authority by invoking emergency powers to impose broad import duties. The judges ruled that the approach adopted by the Trump administration was not permitted under the 1977 law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

While the ruling invalidated many of the tariff measures, it did not strike down all of them.

Trump Responds by Raising Global Tariffs

Following the court setback, Donald Trump announced an immediate increase in global tariffs.

On Saturday, Trump raised worldwide tariffs from 10 percent to 15 percent. In a post on Truth Social, he described the Supreme Court’s decision as “ridiculous” and “extraordinarily anti American,” stating that after months of contemplation he would raise the 10 percent worldwide tariff to a 15 percent level, which he described as legally tested.

The President also termed the court’s judgment a “disgrace” after being informed about it during a meeting with governors, and indicated that he had a backup plan.

Trade Talks to Resume After Review

The latest developments have introduced fresh complexity into the trade discussions between India and the United States. With the legal status of several tariff measures now under review, both governments have opted to reassess the situation before proceeding with formal negotiations on the interim trade agreement.

Officials indicated that once both sides complete their evaluation of the ruling and its implications, the bilateral meeting in Washington will be rescheduled accordingly.
