
Ashwini Vaishnaw Outlines India’s Vision for Responsible Artificial Intelligence
New Delhi, February 17: India is working to build global consensus on the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday, underscoring the country’s ambition to ensure AI serves humanity while limiting the risks associated with misuse.Speaking during a briefing on the India AI Impact Summit, the minister said India plans to organize a dedicated summit aimed at bringing together global leaders to align on the proper and ethical deployment of AI technologies.
“We will organize a summit where we aim to create consensus among global leaders regarding the proper and ethical use of AI, so that Artificial Intelligence can be used for the benefit of humanity, while we can also mitigate the potential harms that may arise from its misuse,” Vaishnaw said.
$200 Billion Investment Expected Across AI Stack
Highlighting the scale of India’s AI ambitions, the minister said the country expects investments of around USD 200 billion over the next two years across the five layers of the Artificial Intelligence stack.This projected investment reflects growing momentum in the sector, as the government positions India as a significant player in the global AI ecosystem. Vaishnaw also expressed confidence that 50 deeptech startups will emerge from India in the coming years, pointing to strong interest and commitment from venture capitalists in the space.
20,000 New GPUs to Strengthen India’s AI Infrastructure
As part of strengthening the country’s AI infrastructure, the government is set to place an order for 20,000 additional GPUs within the next week. These are expected to be deployed over the next six months.The minister noted that this will add to the 38,000 GPUs already available in the common compute layer. In total, India is preparing to significantly scale up its high performance computing capacity under the broader IndiaAI Mission.
“We are expecting another 20,000 GPUs, in addition to the 38,000 GPUs already available in the common compute layer. In another week, we will place orders for another 20,000 GPUs, which will be deployed within the next six months,” he said.
IndiaAI Mission and DPI Inspired Framework
Vaishnaw said India has established a framework similar to Digital Public Infrastructure as part of its India AI mission. The initiative aims to create accessible, scalable, and inclusive AI infrastructure for startups, researchers, and students.The government, he added, is continuously working to provide high quality resources to innovators across the country.
“Our government is focused on making technology accessible to the entire large segment of people who want to use it,” Vaishnaw said.
