Hyundai Stock Surges 7% Amid Profit Dip as Analysts Predict Major Recovery from Q2

Hyundai Motor India shares rallied nearly 7%, reaching Rs 2,157.80 on Friday, defying a challenging set of consolidated net profit numbers for Q1 FY27. Despite the quarter presenting significant headwinds in profitability, investor sentiment remained positive, driven by expectations of improved volumes and a robust product pipeline ahead.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 889 crore for Q1 FY27. This figure represents a decline of 35% year-on-year (YoY) when compared to the Rs 1,369 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue from operations also slipped marginally by 0.5% YoY, settling at Rs 16,335 crore down from Rs 16,413 crore.

Financial Performance Details and Operational Challenges

Ebitda saw a decline of 31% YoY, recording Rs 1,512 crore. This contraction was mirrored in the Ebitda margin, which contracted to 9.3% from 13.3% a year ago. The company attributed these operational strains to commodity inflation, plant startup costs, and an adverse product mix prevalent during the quarter.

Hyundai acknowledged that Q1 FY27 was exceptionally challenging due to multiple macroeconomic pressures affecting both volumes and overall profitability. Temporary production disruptions hampered domestic volume growth, limiting it to 5.4% YoY. Furthermore, exports faced difficulties stemming from geopolitical challenges related to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Management Outlook and Recovery Trajectory

Tarun Garg, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India, addressed these setbacks by emphasizing a clear path toward recovery. He stated that with 100% normalization of production achieved, combined with a healthy demand environment and an upcoming product pipeline, the pace of recovery is expected to accelerate starting from Q2 onwards.

The company remains focused on aggressive strategies aimed at regaining domestic market share. These initiatives include expanding exports, improving product mix across the portfolio, and implementing targeted cost optimization measures throughout its operations.

Brokerage Optimism Drives Buy Ratings

Market analysts remain overwhelmingly positive about Hyundai’s medium-term outlook, citing the strength of its business fundamentals. HDFC Securities highlighted that Q1 revenue performance was aligned with estimates, stressing the management's commitment to revamping business basics through improved localization and value engineering.

The brokerage maintained an 'Add' rating on the stock, assigning a target price of Rs 2,142, valuing the company at 23x June 2028 earnings per share (EPS). HDFC Securities pointed to expected growth in CNG mix and the upcoming compact electric SUV launch as key factors strengthening Hyundai’s positioning ahead of CAFE 3 emission norms.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services reported that Q1 FY27 profit surpassed estimates, noting PAT at Rs 8.9 billion against a forecast of Rs 8.3 billion. The brokerage maintained its 'Buy' rating with a target price set at Rs 2,334, valuing the stock at 26x estimated FY28 earnings.

Future Growth Drivers and Market Positioning

Motilal Oswal anticipates that strong export orders and new product introductions will drive growth throughout the second half of FY27. The firm estimates a volume CAGR of around 9% over FY26-28, with exports expected to lead this segment at a 12% CAGR. Earnings are projected to grow by around 16% during this period.

Analysts believe that Hyundai is well-positioned to capitalize on India's rising premiumization trend, leveraging its strong SUV portfolio. The consensus among experts is that the near-term operational challenges should transition into a significantly stronger performance in the latter half of FY27, contingent upon production normalisation and market recovery.
