India Monitors Strait of Hormuz Tensions as Oil Tankers Transit Key Route

Indian Ships Continue Transit Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty

New Delhi, March 28 – Two more merchant vessels carrying petroleum products for India are likely transiting the Strait of Hormuz, even as rising geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt movement through the critical global shipping route.

The situation remains volatile following Iran’s claim of “full control” over the strategic waterway amid recent hostilities involving the United States and Israel.

Indian Navy on Alert to Ensure Safe Passage

According to sources, the Indian Navy has deployed warships near key ports to assist vessels and ensure safe passage. Additional ships are expected to arrive from the Strait in the coming days.

This proactive deployment underscores India’s efforts to safeguard its maritime interests and energy supply chains.

Iran Assures Access to Friendly Nations

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Strait remains open for “friendly nations,” including India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan, offering some reassurance amid escalating tensions.

LPG Shipments Reach India Safely

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that four LPG-laden ships have successfully reached India after crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

The ministry added that India is actively engaging with relevant countries to ensure the safe transit of vessels critical to meeting its energy requirements.

Government Monitoring Situation Closely

At a joint inter-ministerial briefing, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said the government is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with stakeholders.

He confirmed that there have been no incidents involving Indian-flagged ships or seafarers in the past 24 hours.

Indian Vessels and Crew Safe in Persian Gulf

Sinha noted that around 20 Indian-flagged vessels with nearly 540 Indian crew members are currently operating in the Persian Gulf, and all are safe.

He also assured that port operations across India remain normal, with no reports of congestion or disruptions.

Shipping Restrictions Cause Delays

Reports indicate that maritime movement through the Strait has been partially restricted since the conflict began. Iran is allowing only limited transit, resulting in delays and some vessels being stranded in the region.

Strategic Importance of Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling nearly 20% of global petroleum trade. Any disruption in this route has significant implications for global oil supply, prices, and energy security.

India’s continued monitoring and naval preparedness highlight the importance of securing uninterrupted access to this vital maritime passage.
