Indian Railways Approves ₹647.58 Crore Projects in Gujarat and Bihar
New Delhi, March 24, 2026 – Indian Railways on Tuesday approved two key infrastructure projects worth ₹647.58 crore in Gujarat and Bihar to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve operational efficiency.According to the Ministry of Railways, the projects include a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba (Gujarat) and a rail bypass at Bhagalpur (Bihar).
In Gujarat, a ₹344.38 crore project has been approved for constructing a Rail Over Rail flyover to provide seamless connectivity to the 9.20 km Kosamba–Umrapada gauge conversion section under the Western Railway. The section runs along the Mumbai–Vadodara main line and is currently undergoing gauge conversion.
The RoR structure will eliminate surface crossings and enable smooth and safer train operations by ensuring uninterrupted integration with the main line.“Due to the presence of the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment, direct connectivity of the gauge converted line with the main line is not feasible through a surface crossing,” the ministry said.
In Bihar, the government has sanctioned ₹303.20 crore for a 13.38 km rail bypass at Bhagalpur under the Eastern Railway. The bypass will connect Gonudham Halt (Barahat–Bhagalpur section) with Sabour (Bhagalpur–Sahibganj section).
The project is expected to ease congestion at Bhagalpur junction, where the Barahat–Bhagalpur route is currently operating at over 125% capacity utilization. At present, trains require engine reversal at Bhagalpur, causing delays and operational inefficiencies.
Once completed, the bypass will improve operational fluidity, punctuality, and overall efficiency of train services.
These projects are part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to enhance capacity, decongest key routes, and meet rising passenger and freight demand, while improving safety and network efficiency.
