GIFT Nifty Plunges Signals Weak Day for Indian Stocks Amid Middle East Tensions and FII Selling
Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are set for a cautious start on Tuesday, with the pre-market indicator, GIFT Nifty, suggesting a potential gap-down session. The primary driver behind investor apprehension remains escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, compounded by sustained foreign institutional selling (FIIs) and persistent concerns over energy price volatility.GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,165 around 8:00 am, marking a decline of 118 points or 0.5 percent. This indicates that the Nifty 50 could open significantly below Monday's close of 24,238.50. Indian equities concluded Monday in the red after heavy selling pressure was observed particularly in private banking stocks following their June-quarter earnings reports and weak global market cues.
Pre-Market Warning: GIFT Nifty Points to Gap Down for Indian Indices
Indian markets closed on a subdued note amidst caution. The Sensex fell by 442.93 points, or 0.57 percent, closing at 77,708.52. Similarly, the Nifty recorded a decline of 95.80 points, amounting to 0.39 percent, ending the day at 24,238.50.While global equities showed mixed signals on Monday, the domestic market faced headwinds from institutional selling and ongoing regional instability. This sentiment has been heightened by the persistent monitoring of developments in West Asia after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis threatened a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia.
Geopolitical Risks Weigh on Sentiment despite Asian Rally
Asian markets managed to recover marginally on Tuesday, buoyed by hopes that diplomatic efforts are underway to ease tensions between the US and Iran. This sentiment helped oil prices retreat somewhat from their recent peak levels. In contrast, US stock futures edged higher, though European market indicators pointed towards a weaker opening session for European indices. The broader Asian markets index outside Japan rose 0.25 percent after three consecutive sessions of losses, while South Korea's KOSPI climbed nearly 3 percent and Japan's Nikkei gained over 1 percent.
Oil Prices Eased But Global Tensions Persist
Brent crude futures slipped to $88.87 per barrel, representing a 0.4 percent drop from the previous session's high of $91.42. US West Texas Intermediate crude remained largely stable at $82.47 per barrel. However, despite this modest pullback in commodity markets, geopolitical tensions continue to be a critical risk for energy stability and are particularly concerning for inflation-sensitive economies like India. On the global front, Wall Street finished lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 0.59 percent, the S&P 500 declining 0.19 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite slipping 0.05 percent.
Expert Outlook: Investor Caution Amid External Headwinds
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, maintained that investors must remain cautious due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, coupled with elevated crude oil prices, persistent FII selling, and weakness observed in the rupee. He noted that while the June-quarter earnings season is set to drive stock-specific activity, broader market sentiment remains sensitive until clarity emerges on the geopolitical situation and global capital flows stabilize. From an analytical perspective, Ponmudi stated that the Nifty maintains a cautiously constructive bias. The immediate resistance zone for the index is seen as 24,300-24,400. A sustained move above this band could set the path towards the 24,500-24,600 target range. Conversely, 24,100 remains the key support level; a breach below this point could trigger fresh selling pressure toward the 24,000 mark.
Institutional Flows Diverge Amid Market Stress
Investor flows on Monday showed a clear divergence between international and domestic investors. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) recorded net sales of Indian equities, offloading shares worth Rs 1,121 crore. Counterbalancing this pressure, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided significant support to the market by purchasing shares valued at Rs 1,312 crore.Disclaimer: Due care and diligence have been taken in compiling and presenting news and market-related content.
