Foreign Investors Reversal: FIIs Surge Back to Buying Amid Cautious Market Dip

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) returned as net buyers in the Indian equities market on August 7, reversing a streak of consecutive selling sessions. FIIs purchased shares worth Rs 480.24 crore in the session, indicating a gradual shift in sentiment among foreign capital flows. Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also remained net buyers, injecting an inflow of Rs 235.56 crore into the markets.

Daily Institutional Flows and Investor Activity

The day saw robust activity from both international and domestic institutions. DIIs were responsible for a substantial net inflow of Rs 235.56 crore after purchasing shares worth Rs 15,679.58 crore against sales of Rs 15,444.02 crore.

FII performance, though modest, was critical as they purchased shares amounting to Rs 12,941.31 crore while selling Rs 12,461.07 crore, resulting in the noted net inflow of Rs 480.24 crore.

Looking at the year-to-date trend, the picture remains mixed for global investors. FIIs have remained net sellers over the past year, having withdrawn approximately Rs 3.39 lakh crore from Indian equities. Conversely, DIIs stand as strong net buyers on a YTD basis, investing nearly Rs 4.98 lakh crore and continuing to provide vital support to domestic markets.

Index Performance Amid Global Headwinds

Indian benchmark indices concluded the session trading lower as market participants engaged in profit booking following recent rallies. The primary indicator of the broader mood, Nifty 50, declined by 0.3% closing at 24,570.

While the wider market exhibited resilience, niche segments showed distinct performance trends. Nifty Midcap 100 managed a gain of 0.2%, suggesting strength in mid-sized companies. The Nifty Smallcap 100 ended the day flat, signaling caution across smaller constituents.

Market Outlook and Key Catalysts for Next Week

Despite global headwinds, equity valuations are expected to trade with a positive bias in the coming week, supported by resilient domestic fundamentals. This favorable outlook is bolstered by easing geopolitical concerns and ongoing stock-specific opportunities as the June quarter earnings season nears completion.

Key areas that outperformed during Friday's session included the automobiles sector, information technology (IT), and PSU banks. Conversely, private banks, consumer durables, and chemicals lagged in their performance.

Several crucial global factors remain under scrutiny for market sentiment. Brent crude oil has hovered near $82 per barrel, while high US Treasury yields and a slightly weaker rupee at ₹95.2 per US dollar will be closely monitored regarding capital flows.

Investors are also slated to track significant upcoming data points, including India’s CPI and WPI inflation data, remaining June-quarter earnings announcements, and US inflation readings. The primary market is also set for robust activity with multiple companies like Molbio Diagnostics and Dhoot Transmission scheduled to launch IPOs soon.
